According to STILLEN (@RoelStillen) Dyno Testing. 14 torque gain as well 👀

87 vs. 91 Octane Fuel: STILLEN’s Kyle Millen reveals how fuel octane impacts the Tacoma’s 2.4L turbo engine, showing a 20-horsepower gain with premium fuel. Learn about octane ratings, real-world dyno results, fuel costs, warranty considerations, and why 91 or 93 octane is essential for maximum power, efficiency, and engine longevity—especially with TruControl or other performance upgrades. There was another dyno post on this forum that has the truck putting down roughly 260 hp and 306 tq at the wheels. My butt dyno seems to agree more with those numbers, the numbers in this video seem low. Interesting. Also, Toyota tuned the engine for 87, I have a hard time believing it made less power on 87 due to knock and pulling timing. It’s more than likely that the engine simply detected higher octane and increased the power a bit. Running 87 in this truck should be completely safe.

Yeah I totally agree 87 is completely safe, the Toyota engineers know their stuff. Just thought the power increase without any tune was notable.

I mean I’ve been running 91 since mile 0…. It’s got some umph on it. Love mine.
Did the same thing, noticed some more umph after my first fill up as well, the motor seemed to run smoother/quieter. These numbers line up with my butt dyno lol

Looking to buy a 4th Gen taco soon.
I wasn’t planning to run premium but after seeing data supporting gains from 91+ without tune, I’m going to switch

Especially since I’m running 35’s. And a camper rtt. About to add some sliders and a tubed steel rear bumper. Let’s see how this goes.

Definitely and it makes sense, however, I just dont agree with the rationale the guy gave in the video. Also a 30% drivetrain loss doesn’t seem reasonable so I’m not buying those numbers either. But whatever the #s are, at least we can be certain more power is on tap if you want it!

That is not a surprise to me having really followed the tune and testing stuff for our German car with turbo. That 1.8 L would get a smaller but similar gain in tests.

Thing is for me is even my stock pickup that is work oriented is generally plenty fine and I know I can just go to the farmer's coop near by to get no alcohol high octane if or when appropriate.

People will make a fuel economy argument but I tested that with our car. The slight mileage increase didn't have a cost to benefit ratio.

I do my racing with some sports that will not endanger others on public highways or I race to the toilet so I'll enjoy looking into all this but keep mostly buying standard octane with the "top tier" seal.

I also run 33s - heavy fuckers in 275/70/18 — truck has always liked 91 more than 87 and now the difference with the tires is even greater - more power and better MPG on 91

FWIW… I read about Toyota’s tuning somewhere? When changing to 91/93 octane the computer takes about a tank of fuel before you get the full benefit… So you probably wont immediately notice a difference?
