265 vs 285’s on stock suspension

Picking up some Method MR305’s (17x8.5 +25) tomorrow and I’m still kinda torn between Wildpeak AT4W’s at 265/70/17 or 285/70/17 wheels even after digging throughout the internet all morning.

Light-moderate off-roading, camping, and snow. I live SoCal but regularly drive up to the mountains and surrounding states. Looking for some input.

Most 285 tires are 10 ply E load range. They will be heavy and stiffer riding if that makes any difference. Plenty of folks running them however.

If you’re going through the effort of getting new wheels I don’t know why you wouldn’t go 285/70r17. It fits no problem on stock suspension even with that offset wheel. Here’s mine.

skinnier tires have been proven to perform better off-road, but thicker 285's look better on the truck to me so that's up to your personal preference.

if you are not loading up incredibly heavy or towing a lot, I would recommend sticking with 6ply C load as E load will increase rotational weight and stiffness in the ride, definitely overkill for a midsize. hell I even chose ko2's over ko3's as the increase in "performance" was not worth the 5lb increase per tire.

I'm socal local too and go up to the mountains for snow very frequently, AT4W's will be more than capable

Wider tires are also better on road (more surface area = better braking) which is where most of us will be spending most of our time anyway.

I have 285/70/17 Falken AT4s and I really like them. The only difference I would make next time is to go for a LT version (I have the SL) because I plan on getting a Go Fast Camper and when I have all my tools/camping gear/full size spare loaded, the weight starts to add up quick. Plus the peace of mind you get with a more durable tire when out in the middle of nowhere is, to me, a lot more valuable than better MPGs and a more pliant ride you get with a SL tire setup. However, if you spend the majority of your time on road, SL AT tires are the better option imo.

What sizes would fit into the Skinnier category? I used to ru s kinny tires in the 80's and preferred them over the wider versions.

Very nice ride in the ATW4s.

I saw a guy in a new ford yesterday with a 8" lift, 22" wheels and superwide low profile racing tires - so some people just have other priorities. Made me laugh.

So no rub with 285/70/17 at full flex? Does anyone know offset and backspacing on stock TRD OR wheels?
Also my build sheet shows 18 inch wheels but every pic/video I’ve seen of the TRD OR shows 17 inch wheels.
