@Ron I did listen to my front door speakers and it is just like what you described. Mostly bass with just a small amount of higher frequencies and muddy as hell. It sounds like a cheap speaker in a cardboard box.

So that has to be a big part of why that sound system is so weak, since you should be getting midranges out of those IMO. I doubt that anything short of replacing the entire system will really fix that.

I don't think it is your truck, but just a clear miss on Toyota/JBL's part.

We do have the JBL system it was very easy to install, a tremendous difference well worth the money especially the fact.
A. Plug and play
B. You can always add amps later and upgrade when you are able to.
C. Easy instillation.

Sounds to me like all available options are just a cover up for a crappy, overpriced system.
I agree. Toyota should have deleted the removable speaker and made this cheap system standard. Then they could have made even more money by selling us something that really was premium sound.
