Braking- stopping at intersections, red lights

@fitsofrage88 Obviously it is not the hybrid system in your truck. When my transmission downshifts at the right time it is smooth, but sometimes there is a delay and then a thud. I think it is caused by a sticky shift solenoid not responding immediately.

I am not an automotive engineer, but that hybrid engaging/disengaging story sounds like bs to me. You know, the kind of thing dealers tell you to make you go away.

The hybrid motor is inline with the torque converter and transmission and is always engaged, just sometimes it is a generator and sometimes it is a motor. I can tell you that my hybrid never clunks when "engaging/disengaging". It is also the starter motor in this system, but it does not do that until you start to move again.

Any ideas? I am having an unusual slight thump after stopping at intersections, red lights etc. At first I thought I had been lightly bumped from behind per the new 2024 Tacoma. I’ve noticed a delayed “thump” after I come to a complete stop in my ‘24. The sound is coming from the rear of the truck and happens 1-2 seconds after I stop. I thought it might be the spare but it’s secured tightly. Have any suggestions as to what it might be? Or is this normal?

I had something similar on my 24’ OR. It was a part the dealer had left on the glove compartment. It was loose, and would roll over and thump against the side.
In addition to the rear seats, glove compartment and center console you have a storage in the bed side.

hahaha the entire truck shifts from the rear and makes it way to the front it’s not any objects.

A drive shaft bearing will make a clunk when adding acceleration, and there's no way you've got one going out.

Possibly driveshaft or axle..
On these Gen4 is it still possible to have axle wrap per this set up. Upper control arm attachment point, track bar, lower control arms attachment points

I’ve noticed it is all how you apply braking force..

I'm wondering if your brake pads weren't properly broken in as suggested in the manual.

I assume you haven't taken it to the dealer?

I remember being told about this old guy who bought a new Cadillac every year, trading in his old one. One year he had this rattling noice and brought it back to the dealership. They searched the entire car and couldn’t find anything. He brought it back a second time… still nothing. The third time they took the car apart, and down inside a body panel, welded behind the seams was the problem. It was a beer bottle with a piece of paper attached by a rubber band. The note said “I wonder how long it will take you fuckers to find this.”

No not yet has it been to the dealer this started early last week I’ve got 5k on the truck now and really been opening it up. for the wierd little push feeling... it still did it once under hard braking when I simulated a quick panic stop situation on the drive home, but didn't do it at all under normal driving. I got on the brakes hard and kept them on hard until the truck had fully stopped, and it still "unloaded" a little. Whether that is driveline releasing stored energy, I don't know.

You might ensure your spare is firmly raised up.

I kind of doubt that it is the driveshaft. I think axle wrap is still a possibility - maybe it is a heritage feature, because Tacomas have always done that. lol My second gen didn't do it on every stop but when it was at its worst it felt like the vehicle behind me had hit my bumper.

If you can demonstrate it I would take it to the dealer and see what they say. My money unfortunately is on that's just how Tacomas are, which is what they say a lot.

Agree.

For the OP, head to the dealer and insist on taking a tech with you for a test drive. If they hit you with the "It's normal" line again, ask them to explain exactly what's causing the noise. Like I've mentioned in other threads, ask if you can take out another truck from the lot so they can show you that "It's normal."

I get that they might struggle to explain it or not want to deal with sales to set up another test drive, but it really depends on how far you're willing to push them.
