So, I was out on some offroad trails this weekend and using my iPhone for GPS on the trails when I completely lost cell service. My Trailhunter's GPS navigational system was working but the onscreen map was not loaded with any of the offroad trails I was travelling on.

What is your favorite offroad GPS tracking system when you have no cell service and does that GPS system integrate with Toyota's navigational system and onscreen map?

Iā€™ve used Gaia and OnX, both work well. I think OnX is cheaper and has more deals, so thatā€™s what Iā€™ve used more.

I have been using OnX Offroad. Work pretty good even without cell service. The overall features and interface is geared towards offroading activities. Works well with the truck's radio interface via Apple Carplay.

I use both OnX and Gaia, to me, the latter works better when I leave the truck behind, but OnX works better while driving.

I download maps with both apps when I'm headed to the no-cell boonies. Easy-peasy.

I often have to fiddle with my phone to get the correct map layer to come up. Any tips or tricks?
I often have issues with Gaia on the truck screen while driving. I've found that leaving my phone unlocked and Gaia open on it can help. I've always wondered if it's an iPhone/Carplay issue or if it's a Gaia issue. Are you on iPhone or Android?

I've never used OnX, but I know many people like it. I don't do true "trails" so I wasn't sure if it was necessary for my use case. I use Gaia for forest service roads and hiking and I like being able to use the web interface to plan routes.

I'm on CarPlay with an iPhone. I use Gaia a ton on foot. With OnX it works perfectly on the screen, and I find having an aerial photo great.

We're headed out for our annual month-long trip to southern Utah, and I'll try that Gaia tip.
