Thoughts on BumpStep - Hitch Mounted Step and Bumper Protection for 2" Receiver? What would be its primary function?? As a step or as a bumper protection??? Good idea??? Many to choose from on Amazon, any recommendations?

I simply don't understand having a step integrated into a hitch receiver. When I want a step to get into the bed of my truck, the tailgate is open. What good is a step that's in the receiver of the trailer hitch then?

I have one that I made at work myself out of 2x2x1/4” HSS, I’ve had it on all of my Tacomas and it’s painted with PSX by PPG best in the biz

Goriders, Primary use??? As a step or bumper protection?
I just use it to get in the bed with the tailgate down because you can’t step on the bumper. It folds up under the bumper afterwards so doesn’t offer any protection.

My concern is frame damage from getting rear-ended.

I put the OEM step on my Gen 3 and now Gen 4. I have to say it’s probably my most used and most practical mod. I have to agree with Sagebrush in that even a minor fender bender with a hitch step could cause frame damage. I would be even more concerned having read a recent post on this site that described a minor rear end hit to the hitch that resulted in a totaled vehicle.
