I have no idea how you'd mount those on a Tacoma.

I'd probably install it in the cab side bed rail , or side bed rails so the rods stand at a 45* angle

For my entire life, I've always lived near the water so fishing has always been part of me. Growing up, I was fortunate enough to live in a house on Puget Sound here in WA. As a kid, I would try to use whatever washed up on the beach after a storm to build a raft.

I remember one time in particular when I was about 13 years old, a rather large piece of Styrofoam washed up (5'x3'x3') and I thought of some crazy idea. I took a 10' long pvc pipe that my dad had laying around, jammed it through the middle of the Styrofoam block and tied two empty gallon milk jugs on either end of it as stabilizers. After dragging my creation back down to the beach from my dad's workshop, I hopped on and shoved off into the water. With me, I had a fishing pole and a semi-flat piece of wood that I was using for a paddle.

I would like to pause at this time, and make note that neither of my folks knew what I was doing as my mom was probably in her office on the phone and my dad was in the front yard mowing. I also did not have a life jacket (yes, dumb I know) nor a wet suit to help with the frigid waters of the Sound nor any kind of shade to protect me from the unobstructed sun overhead.

Now back to my 13 yr old seafaring self. Determined, I paddled myself out past the seaweed band that usually hangs out near the shore, past where the wood debris usually floats, and out into the open Sound. Only when I was about 200' away from shore is when I deemed best to drop my line. On the business end of it, I had my favorite lure that I had successfully used in fresh and salt water for years. Dad gave it to me for my 10th birthday. After about 10 min of letting my line sink to the bottom, I was starting to get a few nibbles but no solid strikes.

It was then that I remembered something my dad taught me; salmon love moving targets. Unfortunately/fortunately, this vessel was without a motor so I had to drop my line to the bottom, reel halfway up and put the rod in my lap and start paddling. It only took 20 minutes before I got a bite. I was in shock. The strike was so strong that it actually started to pull my entire "boat" as I was trying to work this fish in. As I was doing this, I was screaming and hollering for my mom and dad to come watch as I struggled to reel, stay balanced on my Styrofoam, and not get dragged further out into the Sound.

In hindsight, there probably was a better way to do this, as both my parents came SPRINTING outside....thinking that their child was surely drowning. Instead, I was in the fight of my life trying to bring this monster in. The fight lasted about 20 min as both the fish and my arms were growing tired. As I was able to get the fish closer to my craft, the fish on the other end of the line revealed itself; A Chinook! Beaming with pride, I made my way slowly back to the shore where my mom and dad were waiting for me with concerned looks on their faces. But concern turned to excitement as they soon realized what I had in the water on the end of the line. Before praising me on my catch, my mom made sure I knew how dumb/dangerous I was for doing all that without any safety gear or letting them know.

I will never forget this story as it was one of the best times I had fishing and also the first time I had caught a salmon all by myself. I hold this memory especially close because my father passed away last year and I knew that he was extremely proud watching his son reel in his first salmon by himself.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading my story and make sure to take someone young fishing. It will make a positive impact on their life and your relationship with them.

Below is a picture of my Dad and I fishing in BC a few years before he passed.

Maybe throw a magnet with a felt pad on it so we can use them while parked and stand our rods up against them?

Thank you. I'm pretty sure that's the most I've ever written about myself, personally, but I felt compared to share. Just another opportunity to remember the man.
