Oil change interval for 2024 Tacoma 4th gen hybrid and gas engines? Synthetic or conventional engine oil?

Dealer recommends 16000 km / 10000 mile oil changes here in Canada. With synthetic oil of course. I doubt anyone would want to wait that long though. ( I know this because I checked the oil service counter and it showed 15 xxx km left til oil service) hope this helps
I would not go over 7500 km myself. My two cents . Plan on changing original oil at 1000 km just to be sure to get any crud out. Oil is cheap compared to a turbo. The Car Care Nut has an excellent video on turbo care

Thinking 7500. I thought full synthetic oil was worlds better than conventional. 5000 on the tire rotations. May do first 1000 miles out of pocket.

Ya, your not wrong. I think I'll do my oil before 8000 km as well. It's cheap insurance for sure. I'll have to check out the car care nuts video. ( I enjoy his videos, he's probably one of the most honest mechanics out there tbh)

I change all my vehicles oil at 6 months and never put more than 5K in on my Tundra or Prius in that time. I have Toyota care with both vehicles but do my own oil changes. I don’t care to take service advice from a business that sells cars.

This is an interesting thread. Coming from a BMW 435I, I would change my oil every 10,000 miles and never had issues. I don't intend to be doing much off-roading so i intend to stick to the once a year 10,000 miles

Yes, keep in mind BMW has very specific requirements to oil specs that far exceed API specifications. Plus oil filters cannot separate liquid=fuel and water contamination from engine oil, only solid contaminants. Condensation does develop during cold starts, the more cold starts-the more water that emulsifies with oil and become acidic. Paper filtration media is more susceptible to the effects of acidity, compared to a glass filtration media oil filter, like in a late model European engine-even my Audi S5 has a glass filtration media, from 12 years ago. The T24A-FTS engine also has low tension piston rings for mileage gain.

To your point: when the dealership asked my to come and do the 5k service, They didn’t change the oil, and the service writer said that the oil change interval is 10k miles because the engine has synthetic oil. She is correct, since 0w20 oil only comes in synthetic. I let them stare at Floor mats and tie rods for 45 minutes. I then went back to my store and asked a tech next door to change the oil in my truck.
I am sure that Toyota knows what they are doing and a 10k oil change is fine. However, I see the same engine T24A-FTS being spec’d in Europe with 5w30 synthetic, not 0W20 oil, so I switched out the oil to Toyota’s European oil viscosity spec, vs North America

I am sure that Toyota knows what they are doing and a 10k oil change is fine. However, I see the same engine T24A-FTS being spec’d in Europe with 5w30 synthetic, not 0W20 oil, so I switched out the oil to Toyota’s European oil viscosity spec, vs North America
Hmm, interesting.

I assume that might be due to either emissions or fuel mileage. The lower viscosity oil flows better when the engine is cold and might be spec'd to comply with US regs. I ran 0w20 synthetic in my Tundra for years and never had a problem, although it had 3,500 mile change intervals. The 5w30 might be better for areas with cooler temperatures than most of the US.

I plan to do what @mattski2112 is doing. One early change, and then 5k intervals after that. I agree - cheap insurance and I think the long intervals are mainly to save manufacturers money since oil changes are often included anymore.

Plus with the first two years/25,000 paid for, I think the first 4 changes should be at 5k. After that, well I guess that is between you and your truck. :geek:

True for both. I've watched some videos discussing the process, and emissions are a significant factor in formulating new oils. New engines are also designed with higher tolerances, which I assume plays a role in that equation. Like you, I ran 0W-20 in my Tundra and changed it once per year—primarily because I never hit the mileage mark and didn’t want to do an oil change on a cold concrete floor in January. Additionally, 0W-20 flows much better when it’s -10°F.

I guess my point is, in my 45 years of owning vehicles, I’ve never had an oil-related issue, and I’ve run all brands and weights.
