Snow Covered Roads City/Highway -- 2H or 4H?

I have snow tires as well. That a big upgrade over the oem all seasons.

I’ve been seeing that as well what winter tires do you recommend as a replacement? I don’t know anything about wheel offset and stuff yet, so like something I can just throw on there stock?

Mine are on the OEM rims. I bought Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2. I had them on my old truck. But any snow tires would probably be an upgrade on all seasons. The rubber compound stays softer in colder temps.

So I mounted my winters on the oem rims. I bought all terrain tires and mounted them on new TRD rims. I sold the OEM all seasons. On my old truck I used the OEM rims for both and just swapped them in the spring and fall. Guess that’s just personal preference.

PS. I you really want bullet proof traction you can get studded winters as well. That’s overkill most of the time but the penultimate traction on ice.

One thing I learned from an old 4WD mechanic when you have not used 4WD for a while, about once a month on a straight road at a moderate speed switch into 4W Hi for about a minute to move the lubrication around. Do the same with 4W Lo for a few seconds being sure to keep the truck straight and slow if the roads are dry. This just moves the lubrication around and keeps things from getting stuck. I had my Gen 3 Sport for four years and put it in 4W Lo I think two times, yes I drive highway princesses. I do use them to get to the slopes and have never worried about getting home from the mountains after skiing. I know my profile says Venice, FL, but I also have a home in PA and make many New England and PA ski trips.

Good information from all above. Only thing I would add is this: 4 H/L will help your go forward traction, but will NOT help you stop. Don't drive any faster forward than you can safely stop in the distance you have.

I have had toyota trucks for 40 years , i keep it simple and i dont over think it…..if the roads have snow on the pavement, just put it in 4h…forget the rain you could tweak a universal , no need for 4 wheel drive in the rain….if the snow covered roads clear as your in 4 h. Pull off safely go back into 2 wheel drive

Only thing that's misleading is you say "pull off safely go back into 2 wheel drive". That sounds like you're inferring that you need to come to a complete stop to go from 4hi to 2hi.

In my 2014 4 runner i always have done this, perhaps you dont to but i prefer to come to a stop, disengage the transfer case ,then go to 2 wheel drive, im in no rush that i need to do anything on the fly at this point in life life, i dont rush for nothing, lol im retired

4WD will get you anywhere you want to go, but it won’t stop you once you get there. Good point Dirt.

If you use 4H on the highway- the truck really drags as you get above 65 MPH, I only know because I forgot to switch back out as I left the onramp. It was still snowy, so no damage done, but you will definitely notice it doesn't want to go as fast in 4H.

Thanks for posting this. We just had our first big storm and was wondering this. The highway was a bit slushy and I really wanted to be in 4H as I felt better about it but did not know exactly how fast I could go. Cheers.
