Well, I guess I'm shocked. It will likely be used as a bargaining chip. Toyota may negotiate a carve-out on the tariffs in exchange for a promise to move or create more jobs in the U.S. In the meantime, they will need time to wind down their operations in Mexico or, most likely, build a different model, which will naturally take years. Additionally, the trade agreement (formally known as NAFTA) that was revised a few years ago is up for renewal in 2026.
I would be shocked if it came to fruition. The amount of trade between these countries is enormous; the cost of a Tacoma will be insignificant once you start considering the other affected items.
I would be surprised if Toyota raises prices on trucks already in the pipeline, but I would also be surprised if they don't raise prices sometime in the future. Midsize trucks are already expensive enough to hold back their sales, and this will just make that worse. Some quick thoughts: Toyota will do the right thing and absorb the tariff for any customer who has a vehicle on order that might be impacted.
The tariffs will be applied as a 25% tax on the value of the item being imported, regardless of where the parts came from. So that will be significant for vehicles assembled in Mexico.I’m not certain if the tariffs will be based on the percentages or whole product country of origin...
I think all of us with our Taco’s feel the same way about already owning our tacos. I think there’s going to be a bit of Popcorn Theater for us as we watch how this drama Show goes down. How each manufacturer will handle this will be interesting to see, since I already have my truck.
yup I am glad got my truck soon after the election i seen this coming & they were discounting Tacoma's at that time .I would b priced out if the trigger wasn't pulled . I now have all the mods done I wanted ,no paymentsI think all of us with our Taco’s feel the same way about already owning our tacos.
