His tone is aggressive, but his points are all valid. It's the same thing that exists in any other part of car culture. The number of times I've seen people show up to autocross events or track days in highly modified cars "for the track" but have no idea how to drive... Same here. His suggestion to take your stock vehicle out and figure out what it actually needs is by far the most effective way to go, and can save you a ton of cash.

I don’t think he’s hating, just speaking his mind. It’s his channel, and you watched it. The content hit home. He made the video on a low budget, so it’s all good. If you want to load up your rig with expensive gear, go for it—it’s a free country. I’m all for small businesses making gear, especially in the USA.

My belief is that for 90% of these guys I see on city streets with full on setups and 12mpg don’t need or use it. It’s the equivalent of leather for Harley riders. It’s image. It makes me think of the biker South Park episode. I hate posers. Edit- watched again. He hit it right on the head with “pretentious”

This kind of thing happens in every hobby. Talk to a hunter, chances are they have multiple guns. I've talked to some that have upwards of 30. Once you get really into a hobby, it's not unusual to start wanting to collect all the "gear", even if you don't need it.

But I wholeheartedly agree, get out and there and figure out what you actually NEED. I'm not upgrading my tires until they're worn or they become the limiting factor in exploring, as much as I want a set of 33s.

Just another way to make themselves feel superior. "You arent a real overlander! you are dumb for buying all those things! You are stupid for wasting your money and I am smart for not wasting my money!"

And then invent some scenario in their head about how people with nice things don't use them.


You wanna go camping in a Gwagon or an earthroamer and spend for starlink and full electric? Go for it.

Wanna go spend a weekend in the wilderness in your 03 xtra cab and sleep in the bed under a tartp? Get out there!

I feel bad for this poor emasculated guy trying to impress all of us with his high dollar luxury Lexus SUV with its unnecessary traction control systems, all/four wheel drive, flashy all terrain tires, and tank-like skid plates. He must be compensating. Everyone knows the tried and true fwd family minivan will carry all of the kids and gear that you will ever need and take you anywhere you reasonably would want to go car camping.

Bought my 4th gen Taco for 2 reasons: 1) I've driven a truck (a 1st gen taco) for 20 years and it is useful to have one to haul things on occasion! 2) On rare occasions I actually do a tiny bit of "off-roading" to get a good fishing spot by the lake. Having been in the Navy, I enjoy going on adventures occasionally. (No, my truck doesn't swim!)

Overkill? MAYBE. But its how I want to spend my money, what little I have! Though I do have some mods planned, I don't have many planned. Don't see the need. I do have an oogah horn which I love. And, I do plan on getting a wench on the front eventually... that could come in handy. Maybe some tow hooks too. Pretty blue ones to match my truck.

I think others pointing out that when people get really into a hobby they are more likely to get a little gear crazy is spot on. I’ve deff been like this with camping/backpacking gear/tools for work over the years.

Ive always been of the mind that people can do whatever with their money so long as it isn’t hurting anyone else ~ even if they’re using it for status purchases vs utility use. The only time I get my hackles up a bit is if someone is doing something unsafe or possibly harmful to someone else. Not sure overlanding/car camping/etc falls under that umbrella. If anything the most ‘harmful’ thing we’ve all spent our money on is the truck itself (more wear and tear on public roads cus of the weight + higher pedestrian fatality rates in accidents + big trucks are hard for other drivers to see around etc.) but at least in CA ~ not sure in other states ~ that risk is somewhat offset by a higher vehicle registration cost.

are the broverlanders a little pretentious? Sure. Do I roll my eyes a little bit at them sometimes? Yup. But I honestly don’t mind. Doesn’t really take anything away from me to see someone else doing something they enjoy. As long as they practice leave no trace when they’re out there, I’m good.
