I've found that when I close the tonneau cover with the tailgate already shut that the emergency release handle gets stuck between the tailgate and the cover and prevents it from closing. Is it okay to delete the handle? I'm thinking I should cut or burn through the plastic carefully to get it off. This is on an OEM hardcover trifold

I wouldnt. Sounds to me like you need to loosen the bolts at the other end of the bed and adjust the cover back a smidge. Maybe something else alignment wise is going on.

That handle is also is how I open the panels

There's only 1 handle, the other side and the rest of the pieces you just pull the wire which is totally fine for opening it.
I think it's pretty well aligned, it opens and shuts just fine when the tailgate is down the only issue is the handle interfering when the tailgate is up

Maybe this will help you. I have the same cover

The handle is very loose on the wire so Gravity on the slack wire will always have it point down. Maybe the slack of the wire or the plastic handle is binding on something.

It's when I swing the cover shut from it being flipped back, the handle flies out and gets caught... If I close it very slow it doesn't happen but I am impatient 😭

I had the same issue. Ended up just carefully cutting it off with side cutters since the plastic is quite soft. Doesn't serve any purpose other than briefly glowing in the dark after the cover is closed. Was worried that it would eventually cause damage from getting pinched between the cover and tailgate when closing.

If it's bothering you I would cut it... It's not necessary... For emergency only 😂... But really all you need is the wire... Not the plastic handle

I just give it a second till it hangs down and then finish closing the cover. I know what you mean 'cause it took me a couple times to learn to take a breath before slamming it.

I feel like I’d have to slam my cover way harder than I ever would to get the same result, I couldn’t imagine doing that to such and expensive piece that probably would bend over time or break

I mean it's a truck, I do truck stuff with it idk
The tonneau cover has plenty of strength to it so I'm not concerned about breaking anything, and the surface area of the piece gives it decent wind resistance so it's not going super fast either.
I'm not slamming it very hard, just dropping it once gravity will pull it down from being flipped. This mostly happens when I drive to the dumpster on my way out somewhere and have the cover flipped up partially so I can grab whatever is in the bed easily

I took mine out, one reason is that sometimes it rattles. Just be really carefull when you take it out, I slightly knicked the cord when I cut out mine. Not that big of a deal, but still it would have better had I been more careful.

I have the same cover.
I've only had this happen to me once because I open the cover on the other side.
That wire extends all the way thru the cover and so by opening it on the other side keeps the wire taught and that handle up and out of the way.

Velcro is a good idea if you dont want to cut, ive never had an issue with mine, actually was just using tailgate 10 minutes ago, only thing i removed was the blue sticky tape on it .. im really happy with the OEM cover, great fit, no leaks, looks quality

Decided to cut it off, did it very slowly and painstakingly but no damage to the wire!
Now I can shut the cover no problem with the tailgate open, I think it's the way to go
