After attempting to order the OEM axle dump exhaust from a few local dealers and being unable to locate one, I found them available on the Toyota Parts Express website. The part number for the exhaust is PT226-35241-AA, and is currently on sale. After taxes and shipping it was roughly $100. It was an extremely easy installation. You want to have plenty of clearance between the rear axle and the body of the truck, so you can either jack up the truck from the frame near the driver's side rear wheel, or find a good way to park so you can do it without jacking it up, as I did. You're also gonna want to lower your spare tire to make more room to fish out the original exhaust. The most difficult part was removing the old exhaust from the rubber pipe hangers (2), but it just takes a little force to pop them free. It took about 10-15 minutes to do. You're gonna need a 14mm socket (deep) to remove and reinstall the nuts on the exhaust flange.

I haven't noticed any real difference in the sound of the exhaust. Well worth the $100 for an OEM part if you ask me!

I've attached some pictures below.

Bonus Photo! My buddy just picked up his TRD Prerunner the other day. He's waited months for one to be available anywhere around MD, VA, DE, PA, NJ... and he finally found one. Not gonna lie, I'm a little jealous of those all black wheels! Great looking truck:

Love mine too. I got the NY top version because the OEM wasnā€™t available back then. If I hadnā€™t done that, I wouldā€™ve already crushed my exhaust at least three or four times.

I like the look of the NYTOP version, but I think they wanted around $200, and you canā€™t really see it anyway lol. I was definitely thinking of snatching one up a few months ago, and Iā€™m sure I wouldnā€™t have regretted it. Iā€™ve hit some stuff with the tailpipe too (thankfully nothing super solid), and I also like the fact that I have much better access to hosing off the underside in the rear. I drive in a lot of mud, so I have to hose everything down very frequently and Iā€™d cringe every time Iā€™d see mud coming out of my tailpipe wondering how much dirt has made its way in there. I was shocked at how clean it was when I removed it šŸ˜‚.

FYI - Looks good, I did the same for the OEM piece. For clearance, I just unbolted the factory piece, jacked up at the rear hitch with a big block of wood. This gave me plenty of clearance to get the old piece out, then I lowered the truck down and installed the new down pipe.

Is there any droning sound on the freeway with that tail pipe?
I haven't noticed any droning noise, but I also haven't done a lot of highway driving in the last few days (maybe 15 miles total on the highway). I did notice this morning that the truck sounded slightly louder than normal on cold startup, but not in a bad way. I usually let the truck idle for 30 seconds or so before I start driving, and it went right back to how it normally sounds after maybe 20-30 seconds. It was pretty chilly here this morning too. It's the same tailpipe that comes stock on the Trailhunter, and I've never driven one of those to compare it to. I don't imagine it makes much impact on the sound the truck produces since the muffler on these trucks are fairly huge.

Yeah, you probably don't need to actually lower the spare, but it definitely cleared up a lot of room to fish the pipe out. I found a big 'ol pile of dirt to park my driver's side front tire on which lifted the body away from the axle enough to make plenty of space. Either way, make sure you keep it in gear if you have a manual, and definitely double check to make sure the parking brake is engaged!

Cool post, I did this mod too and wanted to add a picture of how the OEM axle dump has a recess in the flange to accommodate the metal gasket ring part. I thought I read how at least some of the custom fabbed pieces donā€™t have thisā€¦

Great information to add! To be completely honest, I hadnā€™t event noticed that before Iā€™d already slapped it on there. Just a quick update: I actually have noticed a bit of drone noise while on the highway, but itā€™s very minor. Itā€™s a higher pitch sound on acceleration that I suspect that the original resonator did a fair job of deadening. Itā€™s very slightly ā€œchoppyā€ sounding at idle now tooā€¦ at least I think so. Overall, the minor sound differences are not something I would be concerned with, especially when you realize how much cleaner it looks and the additional ground clearance it provides.
Another side note: I just ordered a set of the OEM Trailhunter wheels earlier today, so Iā€™m super excited to get them on my truck with some Falken Wildpeaks. Iā€™ll probably end up doing a post on that whenever I manage to get that done.

So re-use the ring gasket?
For this particular exhaust, you take off the old tailpipe, and then you put the new one on. The ring gasket thing stays in place when you remove the old tailpipe, so yes, it is re-used. Easiest mod Iā€™ve done to my truck so far.
