Service just came out and said it’s an issue with the shutter on the grille that controls air flow and they have to pass it up to Toyota engineering to determine if it needs part swap or reprogramming so I’m leaving with a 2023 Tacoma loaner ☹

Usually when a car starts throwing multiple codes or error messages like that it has to do with the battery

had the same problem in both my jeeps after driving from Ga to Alaska almost non stop
I can speak to this as well. About five years ago, my Subaru began acting strange. At first, the digital odometer began showing weird symbols (e.g., like “-“ or “_|”), making it impossible to read. Then random dash lights would illuminate. I had even tried disconnecting the battery to reboot the car’s computer, but to no avail. The vehicle otherwise started and ran fine. A few months later, the car would no longer start. I replaced the battery and voilà, the odometer display returned to normal and all of the warning lights on the dash turned off after starting the car.

Hopefully your issue is something simple like a defective battery. Keep us posted!

Edit: Oops, I had missed your latest post. That sucks. But at least it wasn’t something much more serious. Here’s hoping you get your new truck back soon.

I will say this, the loaner is a 2023 limited with 96 miles on it and I am glad I got the 2024. This truck feels anemic in acceleration, has less comfortable seats, old tech package, sad camera views, no digital rear view mirror etc…. What a huge difference.

That sucks man, hopefully it's a one off sort of thing. Seems those electronic shutters are a real pain in the ass no matter the vehicle make or model

I don’t know but if I were to guess I’d think they all do.
Now I’m starting to wonder if the off road has this as they don’t have the lower chin. I will need to look to see if there’s such a system on my truck when I get home.

I can comment here with some experience, although not with a Toyota.

My wife and I have purchased three premium German cars over the last five years, all Porsches, all with newly redesigned central electronic controller systems known as PCM (Porsche Communication Management).

Like Toyota’s new system in the Tacoma, they are vastly complicated and hooked into everything. Porsche is known for overbuilding drivetrains that can withstand everything you can throw at them on a track day. They are not known for reliable electronics.

We’ve had all sorts of weird behavior as a result, 99 percent of which is transient and related to POST (power-on self-test) faults. Like the new Tacoma, all recent Porsches use active grilles for airflow / cooling management. We’ve had two of the three cars throw temporary faults on those systems that cleared before we took the cars in for service. Tests revealed the existence of the faults but no cause, the same as we’d seen from temporary camera failures; drive mode failures; blower motor failures; drive assist failure; active aero failures; etc.

These have nothing, absolutely nothing to do with the battery; instead, they are related to overly complex interrelated electronic systems, sensors, controllers and software that occasionally fight with each other.

I am guessing OP’s problem will be diagnosed as a shutter motor or sensor failure, with the appropriate hardware replaced.

Cars today are outrageously complicated. I’m surprised they ever work at all.

It's crazy on how many connectors there are on these trucks, I spotted numerous connectors under the truck and wonder how they will handle harsh off road conditions, power washing and road grime.

My son has a 23 and I would not say this to him, but what a trip back when comparing a 2023 and 2024 Tacoma! Huge difference!
