Hey folks! I’m not the happiest with the oem wrangler RT tries as I wanted to be, and since I’ll be up in snowy places in the next month or so, I was thinking of upgrading. Right now my thoughts are landing on something sized at 275-70-r18. So a true 33x10 with the oem rim ~ I don’t think that would impact the spedo too much if at all and would prob fit fine in the spare spot. I would love to get a smaller wheel but I don’t think I can for a while. This is prob enough sidewall for the messes I get into tho!

My question for you folks is has switching to an E load absolutely killed your mpg? Or made the ride insanely harsh?

I think if I could snap my fingers I’d prob get an SL tire but they aren’t really as common in this size unfortunately (minus the Toyo at3 ev tire but I’m not really sure what that is all about??) I think the Nitto terra grappler 3s come in SL too. I would love to live in a world where most of my driving is on dirt but this is also my daily so I’m trying to be somewhat realistic with my choices. This is also my first proper 4x4 truck so I’m trying to lean about all this tire stuff along the way. :)

Anyway. How much has the heavier tire impacted your driving comfort and mpg? I think the oem tires are around forty ish lbs a tire and the lightest e load in that size I can find is about 50. The oem trailhunter rims are something around 25-28lbs a pop I believe.
OEM Tires from any brand are always a bit lacking. In the Trailhunter case, you have Territory RT tires. They are light and look chunky or sure... also not bad tires. But the real RT tires are the Duratrac RT. That's what I run. They are 10 Ply and HEAVY though. Some of the off roading I do has a lot of Shale and I need that, but if you don't there are for sure options. OEM tires are always a compromise on these trucks, since most people will never see more than a dirt road at best they need to be more comfortable on the road and give better mpg. My tires cost me a good 4mpg, but in my case I'm willing to make that sacrifice.

Good morning, I'm looking to replace tires on my 25' Pro. I've only ever ran 10 ply on 1 ton diesels so the c vs e load has never been a question. I've narrowed it down to Toyo AT3 , Duratrac RT in E or C size 275 70r18. I was going with the Toyo but tire shop has hell of a buy on Goodyear Territory MT tires at $880 for a set of 4. They are C rated not overly heavy and look pretty good. With the Duratrac running 1400 and toyos 1200 I'm debating on giving them a try. Truck use is 70% highway 30% forestry roads, do i need a 10 ply for guys that have ran C rated tires?

I’m not necessarily a fan of the GY tires but no, you do not need an E load. It just happens that most of the great tires in that size are E loads. I didn’t know the RT was made in a C. I’d try that. What does it weigh?

The RT was in a D rating according to dealer. I had a terrible rumble from the 10 ply RT on my F350. Didn't know if this was common as I never had an issue with reg Duratracs

The weight, I didn't want to absolutely destroy my mileage.
So, I had the E load falkens on my Trailhunter (60 pound Falken + 33 pound wheel = 93 pounds a corner ). It did not do much to the mileage (maybe 1 mpg). But in my view (and everyone will pounce on me), it messed up the nimble handling and the ability of the shocks to absorb properly. My solution was lighter 17” wheels + a lower load range falken so I get the best of all worlds. I hate not having the TH wheels on my truck but it worked great. Here is my YouTube video on this:




It’s not the solution for everyone and if you can find a tire for you that you can use with the OEM pro wheels that’s a very good thing to do. I just couldn’t find tires I liked in 18”. Lots of guys run super heavy tires with no issue. I think a lot of this is subjective personal preference and the subjective feel of the truck — everyone has different criteria for how they like their truck to drive. Just throwing out another option.

The handling is something that I love on this truck. Maybe it's bevause I drive an F550 or my old DD was a 350 with Duratracs but this thing is nimble. I just couldn't find anything from taco owners about this tire and wondered if there was a reason for that.

I resisted swapping wheels for the same reason so I get it completely. And I kept the TH wheels and have plans for 35s that I can swap back and forth. Your solution seems like a good one and I’d like to hear about the Territory MTs and how they ride. What do they weigh? I think 50 pounds which will be perfect. I may give them a go myself (seriously). D load should be plenty for puncture resistance. Also - D is 8 ply rating. C is 6. SL is 4. So maybe they are C loads? Not sure.
