Great question. I didn’t even look at that. Here is the report I got:

None of those codes are on the TSB. So if this wasn’t transmission related then WTF happened?? I’m actually more concerned now! Haha
Looks like you're fuel started to cut out and a throttle body got stuck open causing the lean code and the first code. Then probably as it was throwing codes something got messed up in the crossfire and that was your turbo sensor reading too high

Good points Fisher. Maybe the event happened because as you mentioned you're driving at altitude and in the mountains. Maybe a sudden change in altitude, temp or since you're in the "bomb/river", humidity or moisture. All meaning maybe/hopefully it was a one-time event. It sounds like it's running MSFT Windows where a reboot might have fixed the problem (unbelievably).

It doesn't sound like this was a transmission failure @Taco Azul, but it does sound like another serious failure that Toyota needs to figure out. I hope you get through your trip and back home again without any more problems.

I think that all of us with trucks in the TSB VIN range will always wonder when and if our trucks will fail. It sure looks bad for Toyota to have halo trucks dying out on the road for more than one reason. It also makes you wonder if this is all Toyota is going to do - just drive the damn thing and hope is definitely not what we all expected when we bought these trucks.

@Taco Azul its very unfortunate to hear your TH giving up on you. This absolutely terrifies me , I plan on going to AZ to visit my parents and I plan on taking my wife and two kids. The thought of a new truck leaving us stranded is crazy! I just hit 1000 miles and got my oil changed at the dealership. I had them change the transmission fluid and they did not find any shavings or debris what so ever. I do have jerking at low speeds and also hard hitting 1 to 2 shifting every now and then so im kind of surprised that it came out clean , no shavings on magnet or anything.

I do have a question about all of this and wonder if any of y'all perusing could give me an answer. My VIN is 3tykb5fn6rt000151, putting me well within the range of effected VIN's. Does this mean it is more likely that I will experience a failure of my transmission? Or is it just randomly effecting trucks within the VIN ranges?

All of this just worries me because I didn't think to check the VIN before I got my truck and I feel like it would have been smarter to wait to get a 2025 or a different truck that wasn't in the TSB. It's my first true vehicle purchase and I don't want to have a messed up truck that could leave me stuck somewhere.

You’re overthinking it. All vehicles work, until they don’t. You may never have a transmission problem. On the other hand your engine could fail tomorrow. No complicated machine operates perfectly problem free forever. I think you should just be prepared and enjoy your new truck.

It’s a random couple thousand if not more trucks that could fail. Doesn’t guarantee it will fail but that thought will always be there. Toyota should be doing a customer support program for this is absolutely ridiculous to leave us in the dark on such a major issue

How bad is the jerking at low speeds? Do you get a shudder and vibration too?

It seems real to me, and seems to prove what a lot of us think, which is that the problem is not under control. Toyota needs to get ahead of this or just leave the truck market. This approach is not going to cut it.

there's a guy on reddit reporting he got his truck 2 weeks ago, VIN outside the TSB, with a transmission failure at 650 miles. if he's not mistaken, or lying to save face for not doing his research, uh-oh:

Utter bullshit until proof is provided.

I mean, given probability, at some point someone with a vin outside the range will have a transmission failure for some other reason. Now if someone in range pops a second transmission i think we got real problems.


but theres smoke and where there is smoke there is fire. This is definitely a bit concerning given how much I spent on my truck. Is the range correct? is the root cause actually what toyota said it was and is it actually fixed? Will every transmission in that range eventually fail?

I dont really know if I want to go real far offroad right now or a big camping trip despite not being in range. not like you can really feel confident after X miles seems like they go up at any point.

Exactly how the rest of us feel. Tacoma is marketed as a “go anywhere off-road adventure truck” well…not really because Toyota admits that there are thousands of Tacomas out there that might not come back
