My Trailhunter does not have snow mode in 4L, only in 4H. Is this any indication that the software is updated?

My truck is also missing the "deep snow" mts mode in 4L, was removing this mode Toyota's fix? Maybe some trucks slipped through without the update, Op's vid looked exactly like TFL's break, beat for beat.

The way he was talking about it, it was going to be done at a regular service appointment because things have to be checked when it is installed and because of how rare/specific the issue is it didn’t come with a lot of urgency and they didn’t want to burden the customer.

Personally I’d rather they say “hey we identified an issue when you do these things, so if you expect to do those things bring it by for a download and otherwise we’ll take care of it at your next appointment” because I’d rather make informed decisions like the adult I pretend to be than be sitting in the dealership the rest of the day.
Did you take it to the dealer yesterday? What was the outcome?

It took them all day to figure out that it’s “something with the front differential, our foreman is calling Toyota”. Will post another update next time there is one.

They will fix it. I do remember from the video that the software update was added to new vehicles after a certain date and would be addressed in other vehicles through a software update. Not sure if we've got that or not. I can't imagine you needed to remove your skid plates. They have wrenches and shouldn't complain at all to take them off.

The way who was talking about it? Sheldon Brown?

The issue with the skid plates is that people have said that the dealership have cross threaded the bolts putting them back in with impact drivers. I’ll be taking mine off when I take mine to the dealership for the free oil changes. I’d rather take them off and put them back on myself.

Good catch! I never really noticed, my TRD off-road does not have deep snow in 4-lo but does in 4-hi. Hopefully that’s the fix 🤞

Well that’s not it. TFL’s pickup didn’t have MTS deep snow available while in 4-lo. OP said he was in deep snow the whole time, I’m guessing but it probably kicked out of deep snow when he went from 4-hi to 4-lo?? They did say ALL hybrids rolled out with the software update.

Great catch. I wish I could go hop in and check if it had it available… now I’m not so certain. If it did kick, what to- auto?

I don’t believe everything that comes out of Sheldon’s mouth.

If your truck didn’t have the software fix, the real question is why not? And of course, does my truck have the “fix” ?

Here we are nearly a year later…
Well I took delivery just before the 6 month point, and I think it took them that long to figure out. I have been in for service since though...
My dealership just called and confirmed it is something in the front differential so they’re pulling the whole thing and replacing it. Not just the ADD. Which is confusing to me because I thought the explanation was that the ADD was intentionally the weak link to prevent extra damage. If that’s the design, wouldn’t you make it serviceable? I pushed back and asked about the software and he had no idea. He said he’s never seen this before and would talk to someone at Toyota (corporate?) about it.
I don’t have access to TSBs but surely one exists which would maybe shed some light on this discussion.
My question is: how do I get comfortable that this isn’t going to happen again? I was lucky to have someone with a truck “nearby” to pull me out, but I won’t always.

Agreed. This rare scenario doesn’t seem so rare now.

I dont know what im talking about, but it seems like MTS or whatever the software is, is trying to apply brakes for traction while its under load and snapping the ADD(if thats what broke)?
