Picked up my Off-Road Premium last week. The delivery specialist wasn't there (sick) so a young salesman gave me the two key fobs, a thin key and that was it. Complained to my original salesman about the handover. I went back in earlier this week and he went over everything. But I don't have the key card. Salesman said I should have one. I've checked all the places mentioned in this thread.
I paid for a key card and I want the key card. I didn't sign anything when I picked up the Tacoma. Will the dealer have it or can they get me one?

Okay guys. I'm going to try to tackle this but this is a convoluted discussion and Toyota has done a horrible job of communicating this.

Let's start with a couple of terms. First is "Digital Key" (DK from here on out). A DK is not a credit card key. It is a feature where you can download a feature to your Toyota app and it makes your phone into a key fob. You only need to have your phone in your pocket and the truck will detect it just like a key fob. This is only available on some packages, including the TRD Sport and Off-Road upgrade packages.

Next is the key card. We were not told which vehicles come with the key card. We were informally told that the existence of this card is so owners had a backup for the phone based DK. That however, is ridiculous... if you have the card, what purpose would the phone have?

I don't have a single resource from Toyota that specifically mentions the key card. I do have several references for DK, however, we have now found out that every Tacoma they have shipped to us, has the key card. That includes an SR model with the LL Package (SR upgrade package).

So... if you have any upgrade package, it should have the key card. It might have the digital key. Check the glove box, center console and the map pocket behind the passenger seat. It is probably there. If not, your dealer lost it. We're having a hell of a time keeping track of this because there is nothing that says it should be there and there is no way to attach it to a key chain so it is often floating around, unattached to anything.
I have a trd sport with the xp package and did not get the credit card key. I asked my salesman and he told me it didn’t. I’d like to get it but he isn’t sure if mine can. I have the smart keys or whatever they’re called. Do you know if it would work with mine and how to go about getting one?

Describe the "thin key". You should have gotten 2 fobs and 1 wafer about the size of a credit card but thicker. That latter is the "key card" you refer to not having. All 3 of these have a physical key in them, btw. The fobs have a little slide lever that releases them and the card has a metal pin you push in and to be able to slide the key out.

If the "thin key" and "key card" are not the same then I'm wondering what this "thin key" is. If you just got a really thin key like the pic below, that's what should be inside the card.

My salesman has yet to get back to me. Seems like this part of the delivery process was not well managed starting with Toyota.

You guys in the South East Toyota region have it rough. There is no such thing as an XP package from Toyota. That is an SET thing. The Sport package includes the key card but nothing in Toyota's literature mentions this so getting it will be a trick. You might have to call the Brand Engagement Center at 800-331-4331 to get the proper attention.

I did contact the Brand Engagement Center. The representative that I spoke with was very attentive and reached out twice during our conversation to senior members to try and answer the question.

They have my VIN but were unable to determine if a card key should have accompanied the vehicle.

It has now been escalated to a case manager that will get back with me within 24 hours. Stay tuned.

The issue I see with the keys should all be together with a zip tie. The credit card fob has no ring so it comes in a clear ziplock and they get separated. Toyota should give you a little pouch with a ring and attached them all together. If you have the small thin key then the fob is around somewhere.

[i don’t believe it comes with the base model OR, at least it didn’t with mine. QUOTE="CuriousTaco, post: 57220, member: 2278"]
Those who have responded so far, can you clarify if you have an upgrade or premium package? Package may matter more than the trim. It’s still pretty unclear whether the base trims have the key card.

So I did receive a return call but not from the Brand Engagement Center (BEC).

BEC apparently contacted the dealership GM . The GM left a voicemail explaining that the card key was not spec’d with my OR package.

My question to BEC was how does the customer know whether or not it is included? That question remains unanswered. I don’t think I’ll pursue it any further. I know how these circular discussions generally end, unresolved.

Anyone know if an RFID blocking wallet will block the credit card key? I'm hoping the frequencies are different enough that it won't.
