Stock Sport 0: Gravel Road 1 ... (rock chips on rear lower quarter panels)

First outing with the Sport 4x4.
Performance was great up and down one of the local buttes. Plenty of power going up and great engine braking on the way down.

However, once returning to the garage after a wash I noticed that the rear lower quarter panels didn’t fair well from the 5 mile gravel access road.

This is my first Tacoma. Is this standard for the Tacoma? Are there others that have noticed this? Seems to be an engineering design flaw.

Running boards are now on order and a paint chip repair kit.

That’s a great plan. However, there’s already a layer of that on the lower part. You can see the horizontal line reflecting the light. Rocks still busted through it and all the way down to metal.
It’s the shape of the rear quarter panel that’s the root cause. The way it protrudes out from the overall shape of the body will continue to be a target for anything kicked up from the front wheels.
Best case is deflect debris with something low along the body. Rocksliders, nerf bars, running boards.

Toyota still having issues with paint? Hard to believe.

Yeah I ordered some touch up paint and some 4” 3M strips for that area. They needed to make the stock film about a foot higher. Should be fairly easy to add film to that area diy.

I got a couple rock chips there too. The stock mudflaps are useless. I have rock sliders with top plate on the way but it's been like 3 months lead time! I plan to put some PPF there and get some bigger mud flaps. Waiting for Rekgen ones because ARK full size is HUGE and Rokblok is a bit expensive.
