When I slide my automatic shifter to the left from a stop to manually shift it indicates it is in 3rd gear rather then 1st.

Is this normal? Is it designed to start out in 3rd gear unless manually changed to 1st gear?

Same here - I assumed because gear 1 and 2 are designed for very low end torque and 3rd gear has enough to get moving from a stop.

Ok, so I've answered this is same question in another thread somewhere here.

When you shift into manual mode on the auto trans, it acts as a limiter. So when you shift over and it says S3, that means you are limiting the transmission to shifting no higher than 3rd gear. Same rule applies to any other gear you manually shift into/out of (S2 would be 1st & 2nd gears available, 4th would be 1st, 2nd, & 3rd, etc).

Is it starting in 3rd? When I use the manual shift like that it also shows '3'. But it starts in first, shifts to second, and then to third per normal. It then maxes out in third. If I come to a stop, it will downshift back to first and repeat when I start moving again.

It still starts in first gear from a stop. I hooked a scan gauge up to it to see what the actual gear is.

Well put, I use it quite a bit here in California on our twisty mountain roads. It locks out the gears above the selection you choose and makes using engine compression to limit your speed descending a steep grade possible.

As others have mentioned, it says 3 but starts in 1. It'll shift up to 3 on its own and then stay there. You can also shift down to 2 & 1 if you're at a stop to have them stay in those lower gears.

Useful info. I have been wondering about this myself. Much appreciated.
