4g Tacoma MPG and Fuel Tank Size SUCKS!!!

I love my new 4g Limited. However, the MPG and fuel tank size SUCKS! Last week I drove across the country from VA to Utah with my son. I gave him my 2016 4x4 Sport when I bought my 2024. When we filled the tank up on the 2016 Sport it says "428 miles to Empty". I just filled my 2024 limited up and it says "212 Miles". I know the tank is "A LITTLE SMALLER", but holy hell man!

The only answer I got was it was a way to improve mpg as each of my G’s (1-4) has gotten better mileage than the last. The estimate which I drove to zero left 2.2 gallons in the tank which could go another 50+ hwy miles. Nevertheless I would have preferred at least 20 gallons so I’ll be adding a jerry can of 4-6 gallons for road trips. I’m gonna have to stop to pee more often than needing fuel. Not my biggest gripe. That would be the lack of tailgate dampening.

I have the hybrid and I have yet to get over 19 mpg anywhere

do you see how many paw paw edition trucks we have on here? i'm not surprised some of these dudes can get 20+mpg going 5 under the speed limit and accelerating like there's a baby kitten strapped to the gas pedal.

pretty sure most people with pro/TH or modded ORs, etc will get well under 20 if actually driving like a normal person.

I have a stock pro, getting 17mpg and it was worse driving off the lot. I've tried babying the throttle too, it didn't help much. Funnily enough, highway driving improved the mpgs for me.

Not sure what you have on the limited, but my off road in average says 335 miles after filling...your like 100 miles off.inless the limited is a smaller tank. Sorry to be blunt,.but did you do any homework before buying. I see many small complaints posted of which most should not be a surprise if you looked the specs over. I am averaging about 23-24 mpg on mine.

It is bad for the fuel pump to run it dry. Have owned Toyotas since the 80s. They could have at least gave the 4G a larger one, arguing less range is a good thing is rather silly. They do market it as an adventure rig.

Used to be a heavy equipment operator myself. We tried not to run our machines dry, ever.


You getting 21-24 in the snow, 4WD on winter mix is suspect. Can’t be driving too too fast is my guess.

Yeah, I traded in a plug-in hybrid on my 4G Off Road, I went from about 1,200 miles average on a tank of gas to 250 miles. It's a little more than just inconvenient, it's a problem.

The only thing I can think of is they designed the truck knowing they would be switching to alternative fuel sources down the road and the tiny tank wouldn't be an issue for long. They didnt want to design the frame etc. around a large tank that wasn't going to be necessary for long? I don't know, it doesn't make much sense in its current configuration.

I don’t mean to offend, just curious of how this wasn’t a problem when you made the change from a vehicle that went 1200 miles between fill ups, and arguably required charging, before transitioning to a truck that can achieve 400 miles on a tank if only driving 65mph with no headwinds? Mixed hwy/town driving will have far less range…

Estimated mileage on the highway is 23mpg, 18.2 gallon tank...you should be pushing 400 miles. Also, life changes, needs change...I knew I would obviously be sacrificing mileage and range, but this is far less than disclosed. Congratulations on getting much better mileage than myself or anyone else I've spoken to that owns one of these things. Even the people that love them say the mileage is awful

Yes, I plugged my previous car in when I parked it in the garage for the night...no searching out gas stations etc. Or you plugged it in to the free charger at work. 45 miles of range on the battery meant you could go days without the ICE even kicking on.

No doubt the vehicles are apples to oranges, but sometimes reading about something and test driving something are VERY different than actually living with it. I'm allowed to express disappointment, it's a disappointing vehicle for many. I'm glad you feel differently; different tastes, different situations; different expectations...all good.

The new Land Cruiser 250 that shares the same chassis, gets a diesel in the overseas market, there is a DEF tank on the drivers side.

Could use that spot for an auxiliary tank in the Tacoma.

The 2022-2024 22 gallon Tundra gas tank looks lIke it would just about drop directly in. That is a minor improvement, however, the 32 gallon tanks appear to be possible if the exhaust is rerouted in front of the tank. I do intend to buy a long bed if/when I pull the trigger and I expect that will make it even easier to fit the largest tank.

The Aussie diesel 250 has a 110L (29gal) tank in addition to that DEF tank. The GX550 has a 21.1gal tank. Why does Toyota/Lexus USA hate us?

i have not yet pulled the trigger on a 4G. One concern is the small tank. I currently tow with my 4Runner, and that thing requires more stops for refueling than I like on a road trip. Following some ideas proposed in this thread I started looking at Toyota parts drawings. The 2022-2024 22 gallon Tundra gas tank looks lIke it would just about drop directly in. I thought so too. I've tried, without success to get the dimensions of the tanks so I can measure. I'm not sure about the 32, but I'm betting the 22 will fit.

I did in my case. Toyota Canada advertised a fuel consumption rate of 10.3 l / 100 km. SO a 70 l tank should get me 677 kms on a tank. Take a hundred kms off for reality and I'm still expecting 577 kms a tank (12.1 l / 100 km). I get 400 kms on a tank (17.5 l / 100 km). Driving the first 6000 kms like an old man. Dealership told me honestly not to bring it in before 15,000 km, as that's considered thee break in period. They will gladly look at it after that. I don't take anything to heart on the internet, just trying to see if other owners are having the same issue and it seems like yes, some are.

I got what I needed out of this conversation and plan to head to the dealership in another 9000 km if things don't improve.

I can get 640km per tank but either drafting big rigs or driving 65mph but no faster

So if you read that thread I talked about stretches of highways that can go a 100 miles with no gas stations. So with this joke of a fuel tank on the gen Taco I had to take evasive measures.

Longpatterened said out loud he was thinking of doing the same I did; buy an external fuel can to keep handy on long roadtrips.
