"But the truck owner who sued asserts the replacements mean nothing because the replacement transmissions are as defective as the originals."

'Although he filed the class action for more than $5 million and claims the transmission problem exposes him to "an increased risk of severe injury or death," he doesn't allege he had a dealership or any mechanic inspect the Tacoma.'

It's a frivolous suit and will be booted.

On Amazon you have a large selection from $10-$30. With today's vehicles it's worth the expensive.
Thank you chief. I've owned this one that's a bit more expensive but where the sensor firmware is constantly updated OTA for new vehicles. Works w/App for iPhone and Android via bluetooth. 'Just FYI.

If you do get a code... They will also show at the dealership right? They don't magical erase after it reads them? (codes without check engine light)

Sorry if this is a dumb question... I'm assuming they have to reset manually

Edit* Has anyone had a code without engine light?

Yes it should also be readable at the dealership. Apparently in the vehicle's ODBC/ECM firmware there are fields to "store" codes. I believe some consumer ODBC readers allow the user to "erase stored codes" so be careful you don't invoke any of that functionality.

The problem is it’s only going to throw a code if the shift solenoid completely fails… you could potentially drive the truck well past warranty and just shift like absolute shit for all that time depending on the amount of debris and size of debris, again…. Nobody expected such a pisss poor product put out by Toyota and their lame ass “fix” for the problem .

“The plaintiff argues Toyota knew in 2016 the 2024 Tacoma transmissions were defective but "actively concealed and continues to conceal the true nature and extent" of the transmission problems.”

interesting allegation… the AL80 series transmissions have only been installed in the 4th gen Tacomas. 7.5 years before production… My guess is this guy will be paid off/settlement, but if this petitioner decides to proceed with this case, he will have a hard time explaining the 2016 date since it is likely that the exact transmission may only have been in the design phase in 2016. If the petitioner is claiming that the basis of the transmission family has been around since 2016. That can be argued that nearly all of the components from earlier aisin Warner 8 speed transmissions do not have interchangeable parts. It appears that this petitioner is using Wikipedia but has no true knowledge of the powertrain technology and development of aisin Warner.

@Kjc My code reader shows the code with each scan unless you click the "Reset" button. It no longer shows after that and is probably removed from the ECU.

I had two codes which were connectivity related, which are pretty common in new vehicles. I did reset them and they never returned. I assume that they are also erased in the related control module.

@32spoke My past experience with Toyota makes me doubt that they used transmission which they knew were defective. I believe Toyota that Aisin was just sloppy in production of these transmissions and I don't think it was a generic failure anyone could have anticipated.

According to the Tacoma talking head from Toyota. It had something to do with contamination within the transmissions. My guess from castings or machining… Toyota receives the transmissions sealed from the manufacturer and is responsible due to chain of custody and selling the truck they assembled. I agree with you, no one would willingly choose to put bad product out into the public, it is simply bad for business.

I'm not familiar with how the assembly process works or if the torque converter is part of that "sealed" portion, but the torque converter produced by Aisin is the SOLE contributing factor to the entire transmission Allahu Akbar'ing itself. The torque converter has debris in it from the casting process, which gets sent down the line to the trans, which detonates.
