Not that it was a factor in the OP's accident, but I would suggest never leaving a trailer hitch installed when not using. Just something else that could catch another vehicle driving by, such as in a parking lot.

Am I the only one not shocked. I always assume one correct smack to the hitch will damage the frame thus totalling the vehicle. Wasn't even aware bolt on hitches were a thing lol.

That's why I always warn people when they think keeping their ball hitch on will help them in the case they get rear ended.

Either way, that's a crappy situation, I'm sorry to hear about your truck. Hopefully insurance is speedy for you and you get yourself a nice replacement soon

Speaking from experience with a past pickup, a bolted on receiver or hitch assembly can also damage the frame. It was an earlier era F250 and after body shop time it had alignment and crab walk driving. They could never get it quite right.

Also speaking from experience, I don't know a brand that has not had frustrating parts availability, warranty frustrations and staffing related problems over quite a few years now. This started with our 2015 Toyota 9 years ago, my wife's German car more recently, and it has been a perpetual problem in our company fleet.

I've wondered if some industry slow down might improve the parts problems but for Tacoma it is still a high volume seller.
