That is why I scan my truck for codes from time to time. More than one person with a failed transmission didn't get any warnings that something was wrong, their trucks just stopped being able to shift to all the gears. Strange stuff.

will any OBD2 scanner work with the pending codes or do you need something toyota specific?

There’s something very strange going on if people are having issues outside the tsb. Strange too that some people report zero transmission issues inside the tsb, none of this makes any sense
I'm going to make my own code LOL not going to wait for the transmission to do it.

Well so far my trans is shifting smooth as silk. My vin is not in the TSB and have around 850 miles on it. But now that I mentioned this it will probably start doing strange things..LOL

Anyone notice a lack in RPM increase at 2K RPM in first gear? Seems like when I'm gradually accelerating, my RPM stays at 2K RPM for a few seconds but my speed does increase (almost acts like a CVT transmission where RPM stays the same but speed increases). Is this normal?
I notice this with mine as well at times and have always assumed its torque converter lockup occurring. Shouldn't be an issue if that's the case... it just seems to be more noticeable with the Tacoma than any other automatic vehicle I've owned in the past.

Would you explain what that means in terms for someone who has barely any idea how a modern transmission works 😬?

Been a while since I've checked in. I now have over 11,000 miles on an OR hybrid built in June 2024 (my VIN falls within the TSB.)

Occasional hard shift leaving home from a cold start, but otherwise smooth and problem-free. Got my first oil change at 10k and no issues there either.

(I am by no means an expert, so if anyone wants to add to this or correct me, then please do...)

In a general sense, the torque converter works for an automatic in the same way that a clutch does for a manual - it transmits power from the engine to the transmission.

Best way I've had it described to me is to imagine 2 fans pointed at each other. One of them is powered on (engine) and the other is powered off (transmission.) - The powered-on fan blows air into the powered-off fan and causes it to spin. This is essentially what is happening inside the TC - it's a fluid coupling.

When the TC is "locked up", the engine and transmission are operating at the same speed as if they were directly coupled. When you're noticing the RPM staying put while the truck continues to accelerate, that is the moment that the TC and transmission are syncing speed and become "locked." When the TC is "unlocked", the engine side is spinning faster than the transmission. This is how you're able to sit at a stop with your foot on the brake without the engine stalling.

The TC allows this little bit of slippage to keep low speed acceleration smooth and to allow complete stops like I just mentioned. There are also a ton of other variables at play because some TCs have internal clutches to allow more or less slip in certain situations as well as computer-controlled lockup, so it can lock/unlock as demanded by whatever situation the computer deems necessary.

I *think* the TC in our trucks has both an internal clutch and electronically-controlled lockup. I could be wrong there, however...

My truck is a late build 24’ and it shifts great on the upshift and most of the downshifts. One thing that drives me crazy with it is a certain spot on the downshift and it’s all the time. Say you are coming into town or start slowing down from going a highway speed and you hit that 30mph mark, the truck will down shift hard in my opinion. I have mentioned this before in another post, but it has not changed even after putting more miles on it.

My truck did that between about 500 and 1,000 miles, and then it stopped. It also did hard shifts from 1st to 2nd when upshifting, and scary hard shifts into reverse. Since about 1,100 miles everything is perfect again, but I have no idea why, or if it will stay that way.
