Thought this might be a helpful thread to post up the payload / GVWR figures you see on your 2024 Tacoma (or others you spot online).

Has anyone scaled their Tacoma yet? If the 1200lb rating actually includes occupants as it's worded, that would suggest a curb weight of around 5100lbs which seems a bit high to me?

These payloads on the door stickers are likely way off of actual GVWR minus curb weight. Car and Driver weighed a premium OR at about 4800 lbs (https://www.caranddriver.com/toyota/tacoma) which should be one of the heaviest non-hybrid models. That would put actual payload closer to 1450.

All the other reviewers and youtubers are just reading these stickers and not actually weighing trucks. It's driving me nuts to be honest

I picked up a 2024 Tacoma SR5 double cab long bed a few days ago. Just has heated seats and bed rails (no upgrade package or anything)

Weighed in at 4760 with (almost) full tank and 210lb passenger.

Curb weight: About 4550

GVWR: 6005

Payload: About 1445

So, the TRD Sport has a higher payload than the legendary TRD Off-Road.

I am wondering if anyone has a 2024 Double Cab Short Box SR 4x4 with a manual transmission that they can get a picture of the payload sticker? I would really appreciate it! Make sure to mention any options on the truck.

2024 Tacoma Off-Road 5' Automatic with Stabilizer Dsconnect
I just weighed my new Tacoma 5' Off Road automatic at a CAT scale...
  • 4940 lbs - Measured weight from CAT scale including...
    • -145 lbs - Myself and my backpack and owner's manual
    • +6 lbs - About 1 gallon of gas missing from full (drove about 1 gallon worth before weighing)
  • 4,801 lbs actual curb weight
    • Base curb weight is listed as 4,630 for this model
    • So I have 171 lbs of extra OEM equipment
  • GVWR is 6,240 lbs
  • 1,439 lbs of actual payload capacity
The door sticker still claims 1,200 lbs (and it only has a reduction sticker of about 39 lbs). So this validates that you can definitely add 200+ lbs to what the door sticker claims!

The notable weight-impacting features my truck had were...
  • Premium Package (includes moonroof, Softex seats, power seats, power tailgate, power rear window)
  • Spray-on bedliner
  • Stabilizer disconnect

Hello, new member here who currently owns a 2024 Ridgeline and, long story short, feels burned by Honda when after the purchase I discovered that the fine print in the owner's manual derates the GCWR to the point that I would not be able to tow our travel trailer above an elevation of 2500 feet! It's probably not financially feasible for me but I've been at least looking at Tacomas and others as a possible replacement.

So, I was rather alarmed by this thread which says that Toyota plays the same game! Yeah, advertise 1500 pound payload and then fine print in the owner's manual that down to 1200. But after reading threads like this and studying the manual I think I understand what's going on.

I'm looking at the 2025 manual and on page 198 it defines GVWR as curb plus payload plus tongue weight. That is pretty standard except most of us and other manufacturers count the tongue weight as part of the payload. You see this again on page 628 where the definition of vehicle capacity weight includes passengers and cargo but doesn't mention tongue weight. So when on page 611 it defines vehicle capacity weight as 1200 and you look on your doorjamb stickers and see 1200 those numbers exclude tongue weight and I believe that accounts for the missing 200+ pounds you find when you weigh your trucks and subtract the weight from the GVWR.

As best I can I am quoting the published numbers for an SR5 4x4 short bed. Obviously the numbers are different for other models and due to the impenetrable thicket of vehicle codes I may have gotten something wrong.

I think this means that the "payload" numbers on your sticker and in the manual are correct. Toyota intends for you to use this number when hauling people and cargo. When you are towing you can add 200+ pounds of tongue weight before you have to reduce the payload in order to stay within the GVWR. That's my interpretation.

For someone like me who primarily tows these numbers work fine. I need 1350 pounds of payload but that includes 600 pounds of tongue weight and only 750 pounds of payload as Toyota defines payload. The Tacoma would work fine if I could afford the loss of trading in a new Ridgeline.

If you hoped to haul 1500 pounds in the truck alone then you have the same beef with Toyota that I have with Honda. To an extent. You can always rent a trailer and haul a lot more than that. My only choice financially is to join the thousands of Ridgeline cowboys who ignore the manual and hope for the best. There aren't any Honda's in my future, our next truck some day will be a Toyota!
