I don't understand why you need to test the 4wd.

Once it is engaged the indicator stops flashing and you are in 4wd. It behaves differently in lo and hi, as expected. But if it fails to engage 4Hi the indicator will keep flashing and that is when you need to worry. Otherwise just drive it and don't worry.

Because the pop that brought my neighbors out of the house when making a u turn after disengaging the 4H makes me want to check to see that it’s not broke. Recoveries off the beach in Long Island costs thousands

Mine has popped as well. It’s fine though.

Yeah I was pretty freaked out as well. Then when everyone said the same thing I stopped worrying. My 3G shifted smoother in and out of 4WD but it was also a shit load more finicky. I think the trade off is that the 4G is more forceful in shifting into gear but in being more forceful the gears aren’t always meshed up perfectly and cringey sounds come out. Hence the benefit of moving slowly when you shift into 4Hi.

OK - I'm with you on that and you should get it checked out.

Did your dash display show it out of 4H when it made that loud pop? If it is still flashing then it is still engaged and a tight turn would put a lot of stress on the drivetrain. I would take it to the dealer and have them check it out and I would not mention the u turn and the pop.
