I'm scheduled to take delivery of a Sport 6M within the next two weeks. I've reached out to my dealership to inquire about this 'defect'. I'll update with what I find out.

I received my TRD Off Road 6MT on 4/1 and have about 500 mile with zero issues. Mine didn't go into production though until 3/15 so I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.

Yeah, let me know if you hear this is a real issue, myself and others haven’t had any issues thus far

I have manual .. got it yesterday . First 2 gears are hard . Clutch is long and u have bring the rev high to go in second gear smoothly . It could be i am not used to truck manual transmission . I have only driven manual cars so far .. Getting used to it . But so far i am enjoying it .. second issue is every time i leave the clutch in first gear . There is different kind of noice i hear . I am sure that it is not clutch grinding . Once u press the gas it goes away

Your issues sound pretty normal. 1st to 2nd is pretty far apart; 2nd is half the gearing of 1st which is not typical for manuals, usually they are closer. The shift itself is not very smooth unless 1st gear is revved out to 3.5-4K or so, but then you're waiting on revs to fall to half of that for a smooth clutch release in 2nd. It is what it is. I say this because the 2024 transmission is just a new version of the 3rd generation transmission that has different ratios for the new truck. It is ultimately the same design as the 3rd gen transmission and 1st and 2nd are apart by the exact same amount, both transmission literally use the same R-1-2 gear cluster.

I feel like the noise in 1st gear at slow speeds when coasting is normal for a period of time and goes away. There were definitely some weird noises my 3rd gen made in 1st at low speed when I bought it, I noticed them when I'd pull into the alley at my house. 48K later and I don't notice any of that anymore and things are great. So I'd imagine that one goes away eventually like mine did.

So far the issue that is the main purpose of this thread, I have only seen in the one thread on TacomaWorld. I have a feeling that it has something to do with the shifter extension housing since the guy lost 2-4-6 all at once, but who knows. I haven't heard of it being widespread, but there are still very few trucks out there overall....I've seen like 4 on the forums.

This was super helpful, thanks! To pick your brain a bit, do you know roughly how many km it took for the weird noise in 1st took to leave? Your example of in an alley it has a different noise is exactly to what and when I hear it, and it always makes me think somethings up, but as soon as I leave I can’t hear much, 850km on mine so far

Over 3000kms and still going fine. Switching to second is a little rough, but probably user error I find you have to be quick on the clutch to get a smooth change. I'm noticing every now and then a loss of power for a second or two after clutch release though which I'll have to mention to the dealer.

I'll be the first to admit 1st and 3rd already got their fair share of grinding, thinking it was in gear and being mistaken (whoops) so I feel like is there was issues, I probably would've experienced it by now. (Knock on wood)

Quick update from me: my dealership said there's been no information sent out or recalls on this 'loss of even gears' problem, but like others have eluded to its a very small sample size to determine if this is a widespread problem. They aren't making very many and even fewer have been delivered as of yet. We'll see how this unfolds.

No problems with mine. Currently at around 700 miles. Agree that 1st to 2nd is definitely different from my other MTs and the clutch bite point is pretty high. Getting used to it now though. I expect it just takes a bit of time to master (which is why we love driving sticks, right?).

Unfortunately I don't really recall. I stopped listening not long after and I also did the accumulator delete, which the accumulator does not apply to you, but there is a small thin heat shield covering the accumulator on the 3rd gen, and I lined that with noise insulation, so that helped me to hear less of the transmission in general. So, too many variables to really say. All I know is I don't hear anything concerning when I drive in 1st gear at low speed. For all I know it could be making the noise still and I don't hear it due to the shield, or I'm just used to it and forgot what the abnormal to me sound sounded like after all this time.

Toyota is weird on the manuals. They really like the engagement point to be super high off the floor. I don't know why, and, from everything I can determine on the 3rd gen, it is unnecessary to have it so high.

The 3rd gen has the old funky plastic pedal. I swapped it to a metal pedal from the FJ Cruiser. 4th gen now uses a metal pedal, it may or may not be the same part number as from the FJ. I'm not sure. Anywho, I was tired of the high engagement, so when I swapped pedals, I adjusted the limit switch and master cylinder attachment clevis to lower the pedal a bit, more inline with the brake pedal. I did that 10-15K ago and it is much nicer to drive, with no ill effects. The clutch still disengages fully, and doesn't engage until the pedal is around 1.5" off the floor.

No clue why Toyota sets it up with so much clutch disengagement....seems unnecessary, but not sure if 4th gen is the same so I'd be a bit hesitant to mess with it. If they are using pretty much the same clutch pedal and same clutch setup as older gens (and FJ metal pedal), then I'd probably tinker with it a bit if I had a 4th gen. Not a fan of the clutch engaging super high.

I picked up my manual TRD OR yesterday and I’m very pleased with the manual transmission. Once figured out where the shift points should be it was very smooth. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a manual in a personal vehicle, but I used to drive an 18 speed for a living so the longer engagement of the clutch is “familiar” to me.

so every time at red lights u come to stop and when light turns green every body want to rush and go But with this manual tacoma first gear and 2 gear is very small . If i try to rev first gear high then it gives me jerk in second gear and if i dont rev high and change 1st gear to 2 nd gear around 1700-2000 rpm it feels very slow . traffic behind doesn't like that .. so i dont how do get this truck quick to at least 40 km per hour speed . How should i shift 1-2 nd gear . am i doing something wrong
