I went through the grill shutter issue with the early 24 builds (bought in February). I waited 39 days for the part to arrive so I feel the OP’s pain. Unfortunately this is the reality of the post COVID era. Sooner or later and regardless of what brand vehicle you drive you’re going to have a repair with extended downtime due to lack of parts.

And you better hope you are not involved in a collision. I have two neighbors that have been rear ended in the past year and both were without their vehicles for months. I understand collision parts are even more difficult to source.
Did your truck sit at dealership for 39 days? Does your state have the 30 days at dealership lemon law? If so you personally made the choice to let it go without legal action.

Well Mathew I don’t really give a shit about the legal aspects of this deal. My point is 39 days with no part has nothing to do with the truck being unreliable and everything to do with the reality of the world we live in.

Toyota is at the mercy of its suppliers and the suppliers are at the mercy of their suppliers and on and on.

If the OP wants to bail because of this they will be stepping into the same situation with any other brand and model sooner or later.

That's true and I don't understand why. We are very post covid and even vehicles that have been out for years are taking forever to get parts. Co-worker was in an accident with her 2020 Honda HR-V recently, most parts came within 2 weeks except 1 rear tail light which took over a month to obtain and they ended up getting an aftermarket because there was still no ETA on OEM. Gramma's 19 Accord had the AC go out, one part took over 2 weeks to show up. Being a new model doesn't help things with the Tacoma but depending on the part, you could still be waiting weeks or past 30 days with other manufacturers.

Sorry to hear about this OP, that is just straight up bad luck and not a common issue.

Well this is shit luck. Bought a brand new 2024 Tacoma TRD Sport Premium on August 1st.
Took it back to the dealer after 7 days since the fuel door wouldn't close; told that parts weren't available with no ETA for parts
Returned again to service on August 17th after fuel sensor stopped working and was unable to fill gas in to the car since the siphon was closed. Was told entire fuel door, fuel sensor and siphon mechanism failed and needed replacement.
Car has 310 miles on it.
No ETA on parts.
Contacted Toyota Brand Engagement to see if they could source parts for a brand new Tacoma that is currently being produced. Again told no ETA.
Just reached to a 3rd party arbitrator to see if I could get my money back or they can get me a brand new truck.
This is bullshit.
My first and last Toyota. Disappointed with both dealer and corporate response.

Sorry this happened to you. I am in the beginning stages of the same situation. 2024 Tacoma with under 200 miles had a complete engine failure and motor toasted. Haven't even made my first payment. Have to pay for a loaner and hope to get reimbursed by Toyota. There is no ETA on the new motor. From what I have seen I am in for a long upward battle. Please keep us posted and best of luck.

Lemon law does not say it's a lemon if it's sitting for 30+ days. If parts are on backorder, that's different. The truck is pending repair, not actively in repair. Legally, those are 2 different things.

What’s to keep manufacturers or dealers from just declaring that parts are on back order for every single one of these potential lemon claims?

I know that in some states the measure is 30 days or more for the vehicle to be out of service. That would apply no matter what the cause of the delay. I guess it is good to know exactly what the lemon law details are in your state.

Never, ever, call a Toyota Tacoma pickup-truck a freaking car. Or any other pickup truck made by a different manufacturer. We don't do that as pickup truck owners. Take a look at your title or vehicle registration and I promise you it will state "Pickup-Truck". Get your terminology straight and you'll be just fine.
Back in 1984, I owned a Suzuki SJ410 (Jimny today) and it was titled/registered as a Jeep in Florida. That spun up more than one Jeep owner back then.

Here is the exact wording for Virginia's Lemon Law:

If you have tried unsuccessfully to have your new vehicle (purchased in Virginia) repaired three or more times for the same problem, or the vehicle has been out of service for more than thirty days in one year, your vehicle may be classified as a lemon under the Virginia Motor Vehicle Warranty Enforcement Act.

So I don't think it matters why it is out of service for more than 30 days.

Does anyone actually have any stats to back up all of the end of day claims. When I first came to this forum it was to get answers to questions ect which it did in spades. Now it seems to be filled with world coming to an end threads now.

Any mechanical item is going to have issues eventually. Rev 0 designs have errors to be corrected and designed out. But minus stats I’m not sure how to take all of the threads. Are these one offs/ normal learnings from a redesign or is it bigger than that. I haven’t seen any recalls so I’m assuming it’s normal learnings.

my truck is working fine and is the best vehicle I have owned. Is there anywhere that publishes actual stats on failures per truck produced ect?

@Goriders I agree that this forum has a lot of people who just want to vent and that gives a distorted view of what is going on.. I do not think that there is any way to find out actual stats on failure rates, which is what we need to know.

My guess is that the rate is pretty low. There have been 10s of thousands of 4th gens manufactured and if there were a significant number of failures it would be big news. All we have is clickbait YouTube channels and unhappy owners. Of course if it is your truck that is dead the failure rate is 100%.

But I think the odds point to way more happy owners such as yourself, than angry ones. That is why I will go ahead and buy my truck next week, although this stuff does make you wonder as you put down your money.

here's what I find interesting about these 'legal' terminologies. It says that your vehicle "MAY" be classified as a lemon. That does not guarantee anything. That leaves the manufacturer to argue that it's not a lemon for whatever reason (or excuse) they give, and the legal system can easily turn around and say "sorry, it's not a lemon", even though your vehicle meets all the requirements.

But I think the odds point to way more happy owners such as yourself, than angry ones. That is why I will go ahead and buy my truck next week, although this stuff does make you wonder as you put down your money.
100% agree with this. I feel the same way. There will always be more happy owners than angry ones on a forum. I'm not creating threads about how happy I am with my truck but maybe we should start doing that every 500 miles, just to balance out the angry ones :)
