So I have a question regarding the air filter. Service manual states to replace it at 36 months / 30,000 miles, 72 months / 60,00 and so on. Somewhere I was told and I checked that the air filter is reusable, it looks like a K&N type or some variation of that. Who is to clean it and re oil it ? Once it’s clean it needs at least a day to dry before oiling it and another day for the oil to dry ? I know it would mess up the gen 3 map sensor if you don’t. I can’t imagine that this new engine will be less “susceptible “ to problems due to an improperly dried filter. Will the dealer charge an arm and a leg for a new one every interval ? I read through the owners manual and nothing is said and I even attempted to look the filter up using the numbers on it. Mine read 17801-YY010. It will bring up several different Toyota filters but not this one. I’m going to the dealership next week and I will inquire. But in the meantime I wanted someone else thoughts and input on this matter.

Yeah - that is a good question. I wonder if the dealers know or if they will just punt like they often do. It is definitely something to get sorted out before it needs cleaned.

It is a special cleaning procedure and kind of a PITA, so it would be good to know the answer to your question. I also assume there is a different tune for these engines, since this filter seems to throw codes when it is used on any of the other trims.

The filter in my non-hybrid is straight paper. Are you sure yours is oiled? That would sure monkey with the MAF sensor.

Yes I actually took it out and looked at it. It looks like a k&n cone filter. But it says trd on it and the backing is an odd octagon shape. I will probably just purchase a second one so I can keep a clean one to switch out whenever it’s time. I always hold on to the stock filters so I can run it will my k&n is drying. I like to let the filters dry for several days before and after oiling them.

That is probably the best solution. I think I will also just have a second clean oiled filter on hand.

Although I just went searching online, can’t seem to find one.

As someone who bought the entire TRD CAI and had to return it, I can show you the part number for the filter highlighted in the attachment. The filter is not expensive at all.

To get the entire CAI you had to buy the parts separately.

When I got the filter there was a QR code to instruction on how to wash it. However, the link was no longer working. I’m assuming Toyota haven’t uploaded it or don’t want you to do it. They supposedly have kits to clean them if you call your dealership but I’m positive you can just buy a k&n kit and do it the same way they have.

Curious if anyone has found out anything new cleaning and expectations for these air filters. Dealer listed an incorrect and different filter to consider for replacement when I went in for service last week, bozos. I am with OP, the air filter p/n is 17801-YY010. The QR code sticker goes to Toyota "Page not found".

K&N cleaning kit will work perfectly fine. I have a big cleaning kit from racing motocross and the stuffs all the same basically. Choose what you'd like make sure its dry, lube, and go back to having fun

So I had brought these questions to the dealership, from what I understand the filters are so new that they don’t have a part number for the filter. The only thing I was told was that I will have to replace the filter at 60 or 70 thousand ( don’t quote me on miles ) to not void the warranty. I’m at 3500 miles as of right now. Sometime I will pull the filter out and inspect it. Maybe even clean it when I don’t need to drive my truck for 3 or 4 days.
