My 2024 Tacoma TRD OFFROAD is delivered (a month early)! -- Photos & Owners Review

I put around 50 miles on my truck today while doing odds &
ends, and just cruising. The frame on the 24 really does feel stiffer, and I loved the way that it tracked and kept its composure while driving through some of the shittiest roads we have available.

To me, the truck feels bigger when behind the wheel vs. the 3rd Gen Tacoma. We already know that it is, spec sheets have given us the width and wheelbase numbers for some time now, but I was curious as to how much it would really stand out to me. Quite frankly, it's obvious, and I like it.

Lots of nice people today complimented me on it. One guy stopped me while I was walking out of a gas station. During our conversation, he called the truck a Tundra twice, and I didn't correct him, it looks like a Tundra.

For the engine and transmission, they're great, and mashing the gas pedal while going slow or leaving from a dead stop is such a huge improvement. On the highway though, if you're already moving quickly and mash on the gas, you'll find out like I did that the previous Gen's V6 does that better. In my opinion anyway.

I'm going to try and make a video tomorrow talking about other things on the truck.

It seems like nearly all of the OR's delivered so far have the predator steps installed. Kind of funny considering most people actually off-roading them would probably remove those for more clearance haha. They look great, but I'm hoping mine doesn't have them. Supposedly the Canadian ones just come with the running boards. Time will tell!

Yeah, the steps and the spray in bedliner are concerning. One of the reasons I like the Tacoma is the composite bed; my history with bedliners is they will just chip off, hold dirt, tear up materials, and arent fun to camp in. Same with the steps, you're literally compromising the functionality and appearance of my truck and asking me to pay you for it.

It's one thing to get stuck with heated seats or the vinyl/SofTex seats etc. Things that I'd rather not have but can just not use, or learn to live with. If I have to wait until 2025 for them to stop adding this stuff, thats what I'll do.

I couldn't agree with you more, and adding thousands to the price of an already expensive(ish) truck, so that the dealers can make more profit on things that we don't want, is just not cool. I don't want steps, or dash cams, or $130.00 exhaust tips; I just want an Off Road, Ice Cap, 6' bed, with cloth seats, and I'll probably go with the $6270 upgrade package for the things I DO want (14" screen, sunroof, 400W a/c outlet in the bed, better stereo, etc)! Plus the blackout package!

I was in Saint Martin yesterday and that place is full of Hilux’s with the occasional 3rd gen Taco mixed in. Seeing the Taco next to the Hilux made the 3rd gen look enormous. I usually think of the Tacoma as a small truck, but now I guess I see why many people do not.

Off road tires that look like actual off road tires is all I have planned for now, but we will see.

Does it look like you could put 33s on the truck without physical changes? They mentioned that briefly on the TFL Truck video, but it wasn't clear.

Like some reviewers have noted, it is much improved. You feel like you're sitting in an actual truck now. Even though I'm 6-1", there is 5" between the top of my head and the actual head liner. Toyota definitely put a lot of thought into this.

Also, looking out over the hood while behind the wheel now offers more visibility compared to the 3rd Gen. There are peaks on the left and right side of the hood, but the center area is recessed and slopes down more, offering more visibility. At least in my opinion.

Yeah, I don't think it would be a problem at all, and I plan to throw some on pretty soon.

While the 2024 Tacoma still very much feels like a midsized truck, keeping it in the center of a lane while driving is what gives me the sensation of it being larger truck, vs. the 3rd Gen. It's not a big difference, but it's noticeable to me.

I think these trucks have quite a few nice black accents that would pop really well in Ice Cap. Especially the OR, I like the black fender flares instead of the color matched. I would love to get an Off Road with cloth seats, 14" screen, MTM and Qi Wireless charger, but unfortunately all of that may push me into a Premium package and delete the cloth seats.

I'm also very curious to see the pricing on the hybrids, I may try to get the most stripped down version of the hybrid they offer. It will come with bigger wheels and tires to cover up bigger brakes, larger payload, 2400 watt inverter, better torque and HP,....I'd rather put $3-4,000 towards an iForceMax than SofTex seats, spray on bedliners, and steps I'll never use. The price, mpg #s and packaging (will it only come loaded) will decide that for me though

Wanted to wait a bit to see how the people who get their Taco are reviewing it, although I have no doubt that the vast majority will appreciate the improvements, and also to see if their are any problems with the initial trucks. Also seems that most of the OR's being delivered now aren't even close to what I want, and have a lot of stuff that I don't want. I'm really loving my '22 Bronco BD, and it's comfortable to sleep in with the Deepsleep Overland mattress, but I do miss having a truck, so I'm not really in a rush. Only had to pay $1,000 for the Bronco with my 2021 TrailBoss trade in, so it's all paid for, but I will have to do some financing and hope that interest rates will start dropping soon as well. That all being said, if I see one that meets my needs I'll be all in!

Looks like the Off Roads are not coming with the front air dam so we don't have to think about removing them while the Sports seem to come with them. I was actually looking forward to testing it out to see if I could really get an extra 1 or 2 MPG's on my long commute.

I'm sure there will be plenty of people here ripping them off their Sports and SR5s. There will probably be plenty of them for sale soon. Assuming, of course, the bolt points are on the OR which I'm sure they are.

You sound like me. I’m closely following the allocations for my local dealerships. I find it super frustrating that the Off-Road models all have crap I do not want, like predator steps (which seem like a liability off-road and offer little practical use), spray-on liner (which I despise), $130 exhaust tip, rip-off $699 ToyoGuard, $80 phone cables, dash cam (I already own a better dash cam), hood and door protection, etc. that just add thousands to an already pricey truck. They are simply money grabs for dealerships and distributors (like the SET mafia) and I refuse to be part of the problem. There may be people out there who are financing and think spreading a few extra thousands over five years makes little difference, but I am planning on paying cash for most or all of my truck purchase, so it matters a lot to me. I’ve had several salesmen try to push this crap on me and I told them not to bother contacting me unless they have a TRD OR with the 14” display, heated cloth seats, audio upgrade, and preferably in Ice Cap (I love the contrast with the black trim). I told them I am in no hurry and am willing to wait for what I want. I’m also looking at dealerships further away, as I’m willing to drive a few hours if it means getting what I want. I’m also curious to see what the price and allocations of the hybrid model will look like in the coming months. I don’t need or necessarily want a hybrid (more complexity and expensive components), but if I can find a hybrid with the options I want and none of the bull, I’d be more inclined to spend that extra cash on the hybrid powertrain (versus wasting money on useless dealer/distributor crap). I’m patient and can wait out the initial demand that drives “market adjustments”.
