This video review might put your mind at ease. 5000lb oversize camper with no weight distribution hitch and he has no issues.That's still within my spec, albeit barely.
If the rule for towing is 80% of capacity, I'm there but barely. I was factoring 75% for a bit of wiggle room. Car is 3100, trailer is 1600, and that gives me 4700. 80% of 6000 is 4800. Looks like I won't be bringing a spare set of track wheels.
Also worth noting that 80% rule may be outdated. Since 2012, manufacturers have to follow an SAE standard for tow ratings that ensures that even if the trailer brakes fail, the truck can safely control the trailer (among other requirements).
