Eco , normal , sports mode

I feel like sports mode is normal engine mode and normal feels like eco and eco feels like extra eco . I noticed there isnt much mpg difference if drive in sports mode . Also 6 speed manual drive more smoothly in sports . What’s everyone’s take on this ??
Bcz Companies do have to stay in emissions limits so feels like in today’s car sports mode is normal engine mode .

In my experience (with the automatic version of offroad), it seems to have the biggest impact on when the turbo kicks in. For sport, it is always being used no matter how gentle you accelerate. In normal, it will kick in almost immediately, but only if you put a little extra pressure on the gas. In eco, it waits until you brew your coffee to start even if flooring it and then it lurches you as if it just drank that coffee.

I tested tanks on ECO and Normal and they were the same with Normal being slightly better MPG for my driving at almost 20. I tried sports but gave up because I kept forgetting to put it into sports mode when I started it. But for me I can tell it definitely hold the gear and revs higher before shifting in sport mode. I have used it a few times but I'm not really a sporty truck driver type. There are already enough Ram truck drivers acting crazy on the roads...

I felt like it was operating a little differently in the drive modes. It might just have been the conditions at the time I was testing it out. I had the turbo boost level display on the whole time. It seemed like eco mode was actually using the turbo more often than sport mode was. I figured that maybe it was because sport mode stayed in the lower gear longer, that I wasn't having to step on the accelerator as much as when I was in eco mode. Anyone have thoughts on that theory?

So while I want the best MPG I can get, I also don't want to overuse the turbo because those are just known to be a part that doesn't last forever. I'd love to hear from a pro on these particular engines/turbos on how they actually are working.

Is your air-dam still on? The best I can do is 21, highway, city combo.

Yes, Air dam is still on, it is my daily driver. Usually drive about 60 miles a day, so every bit counts. I just bought it few weeks ago, because I have severe back problems, so I traded in my 22 Supra that I couldn't get in and out of without intense pain.

In this sense, ECO is probably less about getting better mileage and more about keeping the turbo from killing your mileage. A lot of people don't realize that about turbo vehicles and will complain when their vehicle is getting significantly worse MPG than it is rated for. People need to understand turbos absolutely destroy MPG when active and if you are getting bad mileage it is because you are driving too aggressively.

What makes you say that part will be less reliable? Turbo got a bad rap due to being mostly an aftermarket addition to engines that were not designed to handle the power. When it is designed for it like this engine it should be fine.

Note: I'm no pro. Just have basic consumer armchair experience.

How fast do you drive? I drive fairly fast on the interstate (75 ish), but I work hard to be gentle on the accelerator. I probably average 26-27 overall in my Forester Wilderness. I would love it if I could maintain that in a Tacoma.

I drive posted speed on our interstates, 264 is 55, 64 is 60. I just drove home and hit a new record.
