Well, as the title says... My automatic has lost gears 1-5. I'm about 200 miles from my house currently driving home with my family in the truck. Yeah we've probably put 700 miles on the truck today, same as yesterday. Had no issues yesterday or on my way to our destination either. Total milage about 6500, 4000 of those in the last 3 weeks. Haven't had any issues up to this point. Seems to drive alright in gears 6-8, just won't go down to anything less. Transmission never overheated, I have had the transmission temps on my cluster the entire drive, not once have they budged above normal operating temps while driving in 2H on the freeway. I was able to limp the vehicle to a hotel where I'm staying for the night so I can get it towed in the morning to the nearest dealership or, potentially, see if it goes into gear in the morning once fully cooled and I can get back home to my local dealership.

Damn - that sucks. I hope you get back home and Toyota takes care of you. It must be pretty strange trying to drive in just the top 3 gears. Even worse far from home with your family.

Good luck getting home and getting your truck fixed. Let us know how this goes.

Thanks, yeah it sucks... The little town it started in has a lot of lights. Noticed right away it was sluggish off the line, so I tossed it into the manual mode and found it wouldn't go below 6th gear, shortly after the check engine light kicked on and all the driving assists were disabled.

Toyota said they'd pay to tow it the first 25 miles to the nearest dealership, which would still leave me with a $160 bill and that doesn't get me any closer to home.

So there is a mileage limit on towing your truck when it dies? If you go somewhere and it craps out it is your fault because you were more than 25 miles from a dealer? Sorry, your new truck wasn't really meant to drive anywhere far from home. Did they just forgot to mention that part?

I plan to make mine our road machine when I get it and I didn't know I would be screwed if it decides to die when I am out on the road. Totally unacceptable Toyota!

If they don't give you a loaner car, pay all the bills and fix your transmission, then why are we paying premium prices? I always thought Toyota treated their customers better than that. I guess those days are over.

25 miles... That's ridiculous... Sorry this happened hopefully you can get taken care of... I've already seen a couple transmission issues in the forum hopefully it's not a wide spread issue....

I have been there and it’s rough I feel for yah. What is the lemon law statute in your state? Before you lawyer up ask Toyota for replacement vehicle. If they know your going to be with in the realm of lemon law they might just give you a new truck. Regardless if you do have to lemon law it will make things right. Know your rights they are protected and you have the full weight of the United States constitution behind you.

25 miles! That’s absurd. So sorry this happened. I guess I’ll hang on to my AAA emergency road service. I hope Toyota makes it right. Please keep us posted. Good luck.

I didn't know there was a towing limit with roadside assistance and also with that platinum coverage! That's very disappointing.
Also, did you try manual shifting?

With the enhanced service protection the towing bs is even worse. I agree about making a claim with Toyota corporate, because this is very lame and will put a lot of buyers off.

I would also be looking into what your state's lemon laws are because that might be your best way forward. I know that more than one new Taco buyer has lemon lawed their truck already.

My deposit is refundable and this is the kind of treatment that pisses me off. OK, the truck broke, stuff happens. But Toyota should step up and make this right not argue about how far they will tow their broken truck.

$55K, brand new truck and Toyota won't pay to tow it to repair the dead tranny? This isn't good press for the brand, but is revealing a pattern for toyota that isn't attractive.

These seem to be the reoccurring transmission symptoms. You are unable to shift below 6th gear, toyota finds metal in your oil pan and you get a new transmission. Hope it all works out for you OP. Definitely reach out to toyota corporate, they have always been reasonable and fair when I reached out to them.

I think everyone needs to step back and take a breath. Let things play out.
My first question is where does it say in the contract there is a 25 mile limit?
