Rough transmission shifts

I just hit 5k, I'm honestly beginning to wonder when my time is coming due. It seems like it's not really a sporadic issue anymore.

This is really dissapointing hearing about these transmission failures. How is Toyota not doing anything about this yet. Enough seem to have failed that it seems it’s time for them to issue an official statement on this.

*knock on wood* but it seems like 99% of the time when they do fail its well before 5k miles

I have a TRD Sport 4x4 with about 2,200 miles now. When I first start in the morning the shift is not that smooth, specially when I’m at a stop/light and press on the gas, the from zero start is pretty hard. I have not heard any clunk or anything like that but you can really feel the shift, but once is up to speed of more than 20-25 mpg the shifts are very smooth. Also when slowing down at times I feel a slight flutter. Another thing I’m noticing is a subtle whining noise when it shift specifically when the windows are up.

Not sure if the transmission needs more breaking in or learning. At this point the stop and go traffic is not making me enjoy it as much.

Are any of you experiencing anything remotely as close as I am? Thanks.

Just got my truck back after almost 4 weeks . New trans and torque converter. Seems to drive really smooth and shift from D,P,R smooth. Hope this is the last time I have to deal with this. Feel go to drive it again.

And that's my problem too. Until Toyota tells us wtf is going on will any of us really trust these transmissions?

@TacoFreak Yup, I bought this truck to get down unpaved roads into the back country. Now I'm left wondering if I'm going to be 50 miles down a dirt road left high and dry.

Exactly. We are all putting down serious money to buy trucks that we can count on to take us anywhere, with or without roads. That has been the Toyota truck legacy for a very long time.

What do they expect us to do if it dies out in the wilderness? Helicopter it out?

I am getting nervous about taking mine on road trips, let along out into the wild lands.

I think i heard Toyota issues a tsb on this to check the torque converter as it may be the cause. It looks like they are investigating and it may well be a bad batch of parts and not affecting everyone. Still sucks when you are the one affected though.

Trans and torgue converter replace with same part number

Not to mention the chief engineer in many of his interviews talked about how the truck was engineered to Toyotas commercial grade standards… come on Toyota we want answers now!

@Gfenza89 Good point. These kinds of failures wouldn't be acceptable in a cheap econobox, let alone an expensive truck supposedly engineered to Toyota's highest standards.

If this is the best that they can do, then they won't be the world's biggest car maker for much longer.

I still think it’s a relatively small amount of trucks with issues honestly. They’ll work it out but it is taking way too long for an official statement from Toyota. I wouldn’t let it keep you from buying the truck though

I think it is a small number too, and I will probably go ahead and buy it whenever it finally is available. It is just hard to justify a big investment in a new truck when my 13 year old Tundra never misses a beat and runs like new.

Sometimes I think, I am going to spend how much to get a truck I'm not sure I can count on?
