Sunroof exploded & shattered on my 2024 Tacoma Limited (Photos Uploaded)

It’s Labor Day Toyota Dealership closed.
I was driving speed limit very loud, boom sound.
Sunroof glass shattered.
Any comments

Could have been a large stone or debris on the road flung by a vehicle/truck ahead of you. While rare, with the right trajectory, it's possible for it to hit & land on the sunroof, and has happened to others.

Typically most sunroofs are just made with tempered glass, unlike windshields, which are made with laminated glass. On impact, it will just shatter rather than crack or chip. I would suggest calling your insurance company... not sure if Toyota will replace this for you under warranty, unless you can somehow prove it was a was a design/manufacturing issue.....

Not to stir the pot, but I have heard of spontaneously exploding sun/moonroofs. Don't think I've heard of any Toyota's doing it though.

It can happen with any manufacturer, first I've heard on the new Tacoma though. There is no exact rhyme or reason. Temp changes, inside pressure, cool temps combined with the sun, more common on a tinted sunroof for some reason. Sorry to hear about it since the manufacturer usually tries not to cover it "big surprise right?" I believe it is tempered glass so any defect can be detrimental to it.

I love sunroofs, not to open but just to make the cab feel more open, didn't get one on my upgrade "not premium" package and thought well, don't gotta worry about it breaking or leaking I guess. It's not common but can happen.

All of the above are possibilities. I miss the sunroof style on my Mk2 Gti’s and Jettas, it was a simple hand crank and was metal. So no daylight unless it was open and no searing sun beating down through it on hot days.

Due to the way Toyota Canada packages options, I had to make do without some options I wanted to forgo the sunroof.

I do like that the Tacoma sunroof isn’t these ridiculous full glass roof ones.

Here is a report of an exploding sunroof on a Hyundai Santa Cruz forum. The owner that started the thread said that he is sure that nothing hit his sunroof.

This is the first report of that on a Taco AFAIK.

Did you climb up and look at the top of your cab? In WA we have a lot of issues with people/kids throwing rocks off of overpasses. My coworker had a rock hit his sunroof but it also hit the top of the cab and left a dent and scratch.
