Did you climb up and look at the top of your cab? In WA we have a lot of issues with people/kids throwing rocks off of overpasses. My coworker had a rock hit his sunroof but it also hit the top of the cab and left a dent and scratch.
Yeah that was common in Columbus, Ohio where I used to live. A large chunk of concrete hit my Tundra's roof and made a good size dent. It was a pretty freaky experience to be just driving down the freeway and getting hit with that because it made a hell of a loud noise. If they had gotten my windshield I'm sure it would have exploded.

It must be a shock to have your sunroof blow out like that @Redsprings. Are you still driving your truck? I hope the dealer takes care of that and an explanation would be helpful too.

Any tempered glass can shatter if the conditions are right. The sliding glass door in our house spontaneously shattered many years ago and the handyman that came out to fix it said it really wasn't that uncommon. He said that potentially the edge was rubbing on something hard and over time the vibration from opening and closing the door finally effectively scratched the edge and then it was just a matter of time. The house was only three or years so old at the time so it wasn't like it was ancient glass. And, no, I'm pretty sure the dog didn't do it, although she looked guilty~!

pretty sure this has happened with the 'all mighty' 5th gen 4runners. I've read about on the 4R forums.

I had never even thought about a moonroof failure until I read about the one on a Santa Cruz. I just sold a car with one this spring that I owned for years, and a failure never occured to me. Now I know that it does happen and to a lot of different brands apparently.

I had my sunroof tinted with ceramic tint and was warned by the installer that if I went too dark (aka too low of a percentage of light/IR transmission), the heat reflection could cause the glass to spontaneously break. Guess it's not an issue for side facing auto glass but because the sun roof gets direct sun, it can happen. But I also live in Florida so...🌞🔥🥵

It was 11 years ago already but for a while my firm did some projects for home and auto glass firm and from that I learned the failures do occur. My work was IT and building infrastructure related but the repairs would be in the shop, and the customer service area with phone operators would have conversations heard about all of the aspects - coverage, fault, and cleaning up the mess along with the repair.

Fleet experience also gave me insights for all the stuff on a vehicle that can break plus the frequency. Our small SUVs used for delivery and inter site use have had the sun/moon roof break. They would be used so much more than personal use to see those chances of a problem.

Back decades ago I thought the problem was more malaise era autos but it just happens.

Good grief,,,what next?
I sure hope the OP has a good resolution but I honestly think this is a problem more along the lines of sometimes other parts fail or break too. In and out of warranty repairs for our now 5 Toyotas owned have been absolute best across several brands.

Could be from expansion stress. Was it really hot out?
