Was going through my parts 'inventory' I have for maintenance on some of my vehicles and thought it might be interesting to some to see the oil filter size differences for some of the popular Toyotas out there. I didn't include the cartridge element for my 4-cyl RAV4, but in the pic from left to right are the filters for the '24 Tacoma, '06 6-cyl Highlander, and '04 G4 8-cyl 4Runner. Gave me some food for thought when thinking about Toyota's 10,000 mi change interval for the new 4G Tacoma.

I should point out factory the installed ones on the new trucks are made in Japan while the replacements I bought at the dealer are made in Thailand. Doesn't bother me, but I just find that interesting. I doubt there's any real difference.

That's wild to think that small oil canister is good for 10k miles. Im sticking to 5k and adding a Fomoto to my Taco

I’ll say this. Size has no basis. first, smaller oil filters afford better direct oil pressure. Second, oil grades have changed from ‘04 and ‘06 model years. This also affects oil filter size. Oil capacity also changes oil filter sizes, as does new fuel injection systems.

Direct oil pressure is determined by the pump, not the filter. Smaller filter = less captive media surface = poorer filtration: e.g. for Purolator 99.9% @ 40 microns for the smaller filters vs. 99.9% @ 20 microns for the larger filters. When the filter medium is half the area you must double the size of the micron rating to prevent differential pressure from doubling. Stick to your 10K oil change then and see you at 200K miles (322K kms) - maybe.
