2024 Toyota Tacoma Off-Road Premium
INTRO

Been lurking for a while so figured I would contribute about my buying experience, use of the truck, and a few additions. My 2016 Tacoma OR got hit by a red-light runner on December 24, 2023. Bent the frame just enough to put the repair costs into the “totaled” category. Bought it in 2017 used for about $33k out the door and the other driver’s insurance paid about $28k after some negotiation. I had put over 60k miles on it and it had about 111k miles on it when it was hit.

So I needed a new truck (pictures below).

MY PURCHASE

2024 Toyota Tacoma Off-Road with Premium Package (the Softex seats were my one “must have” which resulted in other stuff I don’t really care about like the push button tailgate)
Other Extras: Mud-flaps, body side molding, and tailgate insert.
Total Price Out the Door Before Tag Title and Tax: $50,813

TIMELINE

Order Through Broker (I’m in Texas and Allocation was in Boise Idaho): 4/11/24
Original Build Date: 6/27/24
Actual Build Date: 7/3/24
All Four Wheels on Dealer Lot in Boise Idaho: 8/1/24
Fly to Boise Idaho: 8/2/24
Pick-up Pickup: 8/3/24 at 8:30 am

DRIVE FROM BOISE IDAHO TO DFW

Getting the truck and the paperwork was easy. We got a hotel directly beside the dealership and walked over at 8:30 am and the truck was sitting by the front door ready to go. Paperwork, inspection, and driving off took under 2 hours. Drove off the lot with 3 miles on the odometer.

After getting the truck we drove from Boise Idaho to the Dallas Texas area stopping at Crater’s of the Moon National Park, Yellowstone (Old Faithful Geyser), and a waterfall near Ouray Colorado. Took the truck onto the Brooklyn Mine Trail/Road (dirt road) just north of Silverton Colorado, then crossed the highway and drove up to the Columbine Lake Trailhead and parked, then did a seven mile out and back hike up to Columbine Lake. After that, continued on to Texas. Didn’t do much between Albuquerque and Dallas other than drive. Also stopped at hotels at night and restaurants to eat along the way.

Over the course of the trip, especially at the beginning, I set a timer on my watch and made sure to change my RPMs and speed at least every 10 minutes, but with decreasing frequency after about 700 miles when I started using cruise and no longer did much engine break-in behaviors.

Going over Brooklyn Mine Trail I used 4H going up. Going down it started to rain and I used 4L and downhill assist in a couple places (but probably didn’t really need to). Getting up to Columbine Lake Trailhead I got to go through a stream (very small and easy) and on the south side of the trailhead is a pretty big hole in the dirt road, but not enough to drag and not quite deep enough to get a wheel off the ground. In other words, the off road section near Silverton was easy, but beautiful and worth it.

I have entered all my fuel into the Fuelio app. My mpg based on actual miles driven and actual gallons purchase has been 20.258 mpg total so far for the first 6,000 miles. My best tank of gas was 30.95 mpg which was slow steady driving through Yellowstone. My worst tank of gas has been 17 mpg here in DFW city driving.

ADDITIONS/AFTERMARKET

I have added a bakFlip MX4 Tonneau Cover, Cali-Raised Rock Sliders, cupholder inserts, all weather floor mats, rubber bed mat, and screen protection. I thought the side molding would be white and so planned to remove it, but I like the black so I left them.

Cali Raised Sliders: Install was mostly easy by myself except one included bracket was a mirror image of what it was supposed to be (some sort of manufacturing issue) and they sent me a replacement right away. Also, one hole was off just enough that I can’t get a bolt in it (some day I may drill it out and put a bolt there), but the other 200 bolts are probably good enough. Install solo was relatively easy.

bakFlip MX4: Install was easy except - the clamps that hold the side rails together on each side have to be fully seated up in the channel. If the clamps are down just a little bit on the slots or grips on the clamps, then the alignment will be all off. Also, the clamps closest to the front have to be installed in a different spot than the instructions say (there was supposed to be an addendum to the instructions saying this but that was missing from mine) or the clamps that hold the rail parts together will interfere with the clamp that holds the cover down.

I changed the oil at home and it had about 2,200 miles when I did so. I also changed the oil right before my 5,000 mile service at Toyota which doesn’t include an oil change.

REVIEW

Love it and no problems yet. It’s better than the 2016 Tacoma in pretty much every way. Took it to Big Bend recently on some back roads. “Complaints” are 1) no full sized spare (what were they thinking); 2) the revised passenger grab handle (what were they thinking); and 3) the digital rearview mirror has a vastly superior field of view compared to a regular mirror but it is the wrong distance from my face for my progressive lenses so I have to tilt my head back to get rid of the blurry vision.

It’s a shame you had to go so far to get a good deal. I agree on the digital mirror.
