I’m experiencing an issue with my Bakflip bed cover where the bed side-rails leak water. It seems the rails that come with the cover aren’t wide enough to properly overlap the sides of the bed, leading to significant water intrusion (I can even see daylight through mine).

I’ve been in contact with Bakflip for the past two months about this ongoing problem. While they’ve been somewhat helpful - sending me various gaskets to try -none of the solutions have actually fixed the issue.

Bakflip mentioned that they’ve only received 10–15 complaints about this, but I suspect many people experiencing the same problem haven’t taken the time to report it. They hinted that if they receive more complaints, they may take more proactive steps to address it.

If you're also dealing with leaking side rails on your Bakflip cover, I encourage you to reach out to [email protected] or call their support @ 1(818)365-9000 and let them know you have a 2024 Tacoma with an MX4 or X4s and are experiencing water leaks at the rails. The more people who report this, the better the chances of getting a real solution!

As much as I want to say I appreciate their willingness to send me a few different gaskets, I am disappointed that this cover was $1400+ and there is still no real fix after 2 months of constant back and forth with them.

Red circle shows where my cover leaks (I can actually see daylight through it)

I saw this cover only has 3 stars on amazon, with reports of poor build quality

Not sure if this is a good answer but I don't think they are intended to be fully watertight. Mine leaks from the front of the bed during heavy rainfall or running through a car wash

You are correct, but for my case I can see daylight thru the gaps due to the poor design of the side rails not overlapping the bed.

Are you absolutely sure the clamps are sitting in the clamp channel correctly. I had an issue where the rails were sagging but I didn't have the clamps locked in perfectly. If they are sitting in the channel properly, they should be tough to slide back and forth. That REALLY helped my fitment. Maybe you're running into the same thing

Yes they are, and I think I actually replied to that thread at some point with the same information! Bakflip is telling me the install is correct, but the issue is the rails aren't 'ideal' in terms of the geometry of how they mount.

Good to know. I wonder if there's a solution at some point that they are working on. That's kinda lame they would put out a product before they perfected it.

Mine has leaked a few times through the joints in heavy rain. I don’t think I have had the side rail issue before.

I have a different problem. The cover is a little too long and interferes with the tailgate opening and closing. I'm not sure how to fix the problem. My $1,400 cover is sitting in the garage.

I had a similar issue and took me many times to adjust to get it almost perfect. I had to slide the rails further forward than what the manual said, and make sure the cove was as far foward as well when bolting it to the rails.

I have a Limited as well fyi.

You can try to reach out to Bak. They are helpful for install help.

I'm pretty sure these products are a one-size fits most type approach. Even the manual isn't accurate to the current Gen tacoma. Kind of disappointing for how much these cost!

I just ordered this silicone putty that hope can be used to seal the gaps. I've tried various weather stripping but works for the gap I have (since it's at the edge of the bed-cover rails and sides of the bed meeting)

Gosh. Thanks for the information. Once Toyota MAKES my truck, I intended to order a BakFlip and install it on delivery day. I'm not going to do that now. I hope Bak monitors this forum, because this issue is affecting purchase decisions.

I have the OEM Toyota branded cover made by Bakflip and have never had it leak. I understand from reading on here that the MX4 is not the same dimensions as the OEM cover and that it leaks. I know it doesn't help you as you already have the MX4 but maybe it will help someone else who is trying to decide between the 2 of them.

Yeah same issue here. Can see light through the side rails. Even the front and back are also not water tight. But since I love in California where it doesn't rain much, I kinda just live with it. But OP please let us know if you find a good solution!

Mines the OEM one as well. Per above I just get leaking at joint if there’s a monsoon.

Yes mine is the exact same, I didn’t really purchase the cover for it to be waterproof, I just wanted security and to keep items from flying out, but it is quite annoying the fit is not perfect, I think really the only way to sort it out would be to have them make wider panels but I doubt they are going to do that or send them out
