Range vs MPG

Everytime I fill up with gas my range says 275 (ish). I'm averaging 21 mpg and my understanding is the gas tanks are 18.2 gals x 21 mpg should equal 382.2 range?

The "miles to empty" apparently has a 2-3 gallon buffer for people who have no common sense and won't fill up until they are coasting into a station with the engine gasping for fuel.

It will "learn" over time. I've tried the "small amount of fuel/manual reset" procedure explained on page 92 of the manual below. It think it helps "accelerate the process" of getting more accurate. That said, I have a 24 Taco Pro, getting around 21/22 mpg and still the tank/full miles to empty is only 252. We'll see. It is annoying.

it seems to update as you drive. Starts out very conservative. There’s a big reserve as well.

It definitely uses your driving data/habits to inform its estimate. I usually get ~440km of range on a full tank, after a a few days of extended highway trips I was getting 480km estimated range.

Edited for proper tank size. (69 as opposed to 80 liters)

I’ve been doing a lot of highway driving and mine always starts at 460 km but updates as I drive. Usually get around 580 km to “empty”. But I think you have another 75 to 100 kms after that. Empty is only 60 liters on a 69 liter tank.

So everything is massively conservative. I think on the highway to bone dry is 650 kms.

I’ve been doing a lot of highway driving and mine always starts at 460 km but updates as I drive. Usually get around 580 km to “empty”. But I think you have another 150 to 175 kms after that. Empty is only 60 liters on an 80 liter tank.

So everything is massively conservative. I think on the highway to bone dry is 700 kms.

I've heard there is 3 gallons in reserve not included in the range estimate. That's about 11.5 litres. On the highway I get around 9L/100km (I think I've seen as low as 8.8), so you're likely not far off.

Mine always says 380, but I get more like 450. I routinely get 28-32 MPG. Normally only put in 13-15 Gallons on fill up.

I run mine down to near zero (usually less than 10). When I fill it up it takes less than 15 gallons, so over 3.2 gallons in reserve.

Mine started out around where yours says now. It now is around 350 miles to empty after a fill up. Im at 11,500 miles and have noticed it creeping up since I got it.
