I had only 2 things I looked for to replace my 2016 SR 4x4:

1) 4-cylinder engine with a manual transmission

2) coil sprung rear

The rest is all useless...

+11ty to memory seats because I'm also a foot taller than my wife. My 1992 LS400 had memory seat and steering wheel positions tied to the key and they would start moving when you unlocked it with the remote. Basically by the time you were ready to sit down they were adjusted.

Yes, mine has the TRD seats so I know the angle of the seat back wouldn't be power but I'm fine with that, I just need it to move down and back without me standing there for 30 seconds every time. If the 4runners are going to have this it seems like the functionality is at least there...

Wife would like a driver's side a pillar handle to grab onto to climb in instead of using the steering wheel.

A button or an option in the truck settings to turn off the useless wireless charger would be nice. I don't want to have to pull a fuse.

Maybe I'm dumb but while I like the gauges different ways for things to be laid out I don't like how I can't just have the trip meter in the center. I currently have it blank because I don't need to see "Adaptive Cruise" in size 96 font. I use trip b to calculate gas mileage but getting to it requires digging through the menus (I like the boost and electric assist gauges) and it's annoying.
Easy fix... don't let her drive your truck :)

The thing I've noticed about my Tacoma is that it doesn't have features which 5 years ago other cars did. The most annoying thing for me is the fact that I can't use keyless entry to open the tailgate. My little old Honda lets me unlock the trunk just like the doors... keyless.
Mine does. If that's only a "premium" feature, than that is ridiculous.

I can speak to these from a Limited trim owner...

1) The passenger grab handle doesn’t go all the way through. Kind of defeats the purpose, at least for the vertically challenged to use to help get in.

Agree!

2) No power outlet in the armrest compartment. I think some versions have this, but would it have killed them to add in a USB-C port or two in there?

Limited trim does not have this. I think this was by design to fit/install that locking console box inside.

3) Non-locking gas cap in some versions. This should be a no-brainer especially in 2024!

Non-Locking? Yes I think it should lock if that's what you mean. Mine does not.

4) Rain sensing wipers. Not a hard add given all the other tech that’s right up against the windshield even in the lower trims.

Limited does not have this.

5) No ability to use touch to lock & unlock the vehicle from the tailgate. I would use this on an almost daily basis.

Interesting idea!

6) Non-dual heating & cooling on some models. Why isn’t dual climate control not standard? Seems like an easy thing to do.

My Limited has this, but I wish the rear seats heated for passengers.

7) A larger fuel tank. Not a lot more, but could we at least put enough gas in there to comfortably go 300 miles on a tank?

YES! Fuel tank size sucks!

8) LED front turn signal bulbs!

My Limited has this. Upgrade headlight assembly or bulbs?

9) I wasn’t going to mention the infotainment system, but WHY can’t there be an option for adjusting the volume of the JBL center channel? It’s way too prominent and the only way to deal with it is to move the balance slightly rear and put the mid-range settings wayyyy down.

I disconnected mine. I put blue painters tape on the contacts, but leaving the charging contacts open.

10) No turn signal indicator/lighting on both rearview mirrors. Even my 2013 Acura has this.

Limited has this. Possible upgrade?

11) Finally, a bit controversial since some really like the idea of a bone-basic truck, but why not include power seats on the SR5? It can’t be that much more than the cost of having to run 2-3 different seat-types across all the versions? I get for some that it’s “just something else that could break” but the tech has been around for SO LONG that it’s pretty much bullet-proof by now.

This may be a cost cutting thing.

OK – Rant over. Do you agree? Disagree? What did I miss???

A few gripes I have to add...

  • Toyota not using the camera's for dashcam capture. They dropped the ball on this one.
  • The Limited has AVS with a custom setting that is locked/greyed out. Can't change it.
  • The lane tracing system steering wheel contact warning is to sensitive. Almost to the point of making it unenjoyable to use.
  • No skid plates on the Limited?!!! Cardboard crap!
  • The button fastener to hold the rear seat up seriously sucks.

I agree with the many points others make. What annoys me and surprises me that nobody else mentions it. Some way to get into the bed of the truck when the tailgate is open. Yes I know there’s an accessory flip down step available. But the big three all offer some sort of configurable tailgate that allows you to get into the bed, shouldn’t Toyota do the same?

We all know about the difficulties in connecting to Android & CarPlay and things like that. But what are some omissions (at least in some trims) that Toyota could have done easily but chose not to? For me here are some things that are slightly annoying (on my SR5):

I think most of these are valid complaints. After all, inflation is high, things cost more, government is taxing you more, so yea -- why not all of that? Those are basic requests if you ask me. Unfortunately all a result of penny pinching @ Toyota to maximize profits. I do agree with you.

My questions -- Why cannot all truck have the built-in trailer brake controller? Why cannot all of the trucks have wireless charging where you place your phone? After all it is 2024 after all!

I agree - all trims should have both of those. When I bought my 2nd gen Sport it was very nicely equipped, and without any add ons at all.

You don't want the wireless charger.

Hey @turbosix -- I've seen several people mention this or they wish there was a way to turn it off at least without having to pull the fuse. I'm genuinely curious as to why? I use it to hold my iphone and it seems to charge it up if the trip is long enough. I get if it doesn't work good for some, but why don't they want it there in the first place?

Clarification on the locking gas cap thing. I really mean the gas cap cover/flap. Someone mentioned that these days they're made anti-siphon so that's cool. I'm not worried about getting my gas stolen, but on a few occasions in going through an automatic car wash the rotating brushes have opened the flap likely subjecting it to stress. So that's why I think it would be good to lock just to keep it secure. All my older Toyotas had this (4Runner, RAV4, Highlander) so shouldn't have been too expensive to just put it in. Otherwise there's a design flaw in the flap design/location/etc that allows it to get opened in certain carwashes.

So, Tundra doesn’t have anything either. While you are correct on your point for the mid size category, not sure why it matters. We could go down a list of features that are on Tacoma and not on other mid sizers and vice versa.

I've heard a few complainers, but my iPhone 15 connects flawlessly and never drops. This tells me the problem that some are having is on the phone side, not the truck.

As to most of the other things you have listed, what you are basically asking is, why doesn't Toyota just sell Tacomas with the Premium Package?

It's about money. Some folks don't want to spend $50-55,000.
I have an Off Roa

d Premium...you're actually not correct in trying to reduce what the OP into "he just wants the Premium Package". My gas tank is also so small it seems like a mistake, I get better range on my girlfriend's model Y. I don't have power in the armrest, I changed out the incandescent turn signals, the LEDs are much brighter and conspicuous.

I traded in a RAV4 Prime with the premium package for this Tacoma with a premium package. I miss the memory seats, I miss the smart keys on all doors, I missed the storage, many more power outlets....even the Premium version of the Tacoma has a cheap feel to it.

Oh well, we all make mistakes. If I trade this thing in now it's just going to look like something's wrong with it, I'll drive it through the winter and drop it like it's hot. Very disappointing.

You should re-read my reply. This is what wrote:

I didn't suggest "he just wants the Premium Package". My point is exactly what I wrote: Some folks don't want to spend $50-55,000.

My Off Road with the Premium Package doesn't feel cheap. If it did, I wouldn't have bought it.
