Tire pressure screen reset - when will there be a TSB?

The saga continues...

I got a call from a case manager. The phone number indicated it was from the Toyota Battery Manufacturing center. The case manager was very receptive to getting the details of this issue. I'm still a bit shocked that they are not more aware of this, but yeah, she listened and said she was going to run a test with our local service manager to see if they can replicate the issue. I'm pretty confident they will replicate the issue. The real question is what happens after that.

She asked me what I'd like to happen with this issue and I told her I believe it is a software bug that would need to be addressed with an update to the software. We'll see how far this goes but I thought I'd post an update for anyone that's interested!

Funny story, not really, but I'm also a religious tire pressure watcher/checker, and I prefer to have the TPMS readings on my dash too. Glad I did, because I noticed that my rear passenger tire pressure was off by just 2 psi last week, and sure enough, I had managed to pick up a screw driving through the job site. I probably could've been driving down the road with a big 'ol screw in my tire for a solid week before I lost enough pressure that I could visually tell that I had a flat if not for the TPMS gauge. That little screen being on the dash is a big deal for some of us, and I've managed to live with the slight annoyance of it not wanting to stay as my default. I really wish Toyota would address the issue. I just don't envision it ever happening. I've gotten so many flat tires over the years that I've really developed a bit of OCD when it comes to checking my tires. Maybe I'm in the minority of owners, but it's really the only gripe I have with this truck currently.

Mine will usually switch back on its own about 5-10 seconds after turning on my truck and leaving the parking brake on. If I release the brake before it switches, it will stay on the trip gauge and will go back to the TPMS screen once I reset the parking brake. It's weird, but it does seem to be different for each case. Occasionally, it won't switch automatically, and then I'll need to manually switch it back. I'd be much more annoyed if I had to do that every time. I think it's somehow tied to the electronic parking brake. Sometimes, when I set the brake after I've parked, it'll kick my CarPlay screen back to the Toyota screen even though my phone is still connected via CarPlay, but this just seems to happen randomly, and I can't nail down any triggers that seem to cause it.

That is weird. I'll have to try to pay attention to that. The TPMS screen problem hasn't happened to me for a couple of weeks (very unpredictable), but I normally wait until the engine rpm drops to 1k before I take it out of Park.

I'll have to test this out as well. It's kind of ridiculous that we have to do these ad-hoc tests because Toyota doesn't test their software completely.

Definitely odd, and like I said, I don't know if that's just how it is on my truck or if it's the same with everyone else's. I have my parking brake set to manual because I have a standard transmission, and I'm used to setting the parking brake (this is my first electronic brake) whenever I park. Here's my default cluster gauge, and you can see the "EPB function off" icon next to my clock:

You could maybe try this too and see if it has any effect, but for me, it behaves the same regardless if the auto EPB is on or off. Just in case anyone here doesn't already know, if you want to change this setting, just push in the brake button next to your shifter and hold it for about five seconds. You'll see a message pop up in your gauge cluster telling you the Auto EPB Function has been switched OFF. To turn it back on, just do the opposite and pull the brake button for five seconds, and it will turn the function back on.

I've heard that some people have had issues of this function also resetting whenever the truck is turned off, similar to the TPMS gauge issue (but worse in my opinion since this actually affects the behavior of how the parking brake works). With it set "off", I like that I can easily take off the EPB without having to turn on the truck, and lets me move the truck with the door open. Good to know if I ever need to get my truck a rolling jump start for whatever reason. I also don't like having to start up my truck just to move it a few feet while I'm working in my small ass driveway, so this let's me avoid that as well. I dunno, it just always felt strange to have the truck automatically engage/disengage something that I've been so used to doing in every other car/truck I've ever owned with either the classic hand lever or the foot pedal.

Coincidentally I just got a call back from the case manager. Small aside, I will say that the case manager has been very attentive and responsive. The issue is I'm still not sure she understands the issue. The local service manager still insists that it's working as designed but, what I explained to the case manager is that I'm ok if that's the design but I'd like to know the rationale of having every other screen stay as selected, but this one going away. She assumed that none of the screens stayed as selected so she's going to go back and check with the service manager.

As I said to her, I'm fine if that's the design for THAT specific screen, but I'd like to know what the rationale is if that is the design. I'm still convinced it's a bug.

I just turned off the auto e-brake so we'll see if that makes a difference. I did notice that my middle panel settings had reset. I'm not sure if that's because I disabled the e-brake or just something else that reverted recently.

Interesting, I'll try leaving the parking brake on for a bit before setting off to see if that makes a difference. Also, good to know in regards to the auto parking brake; this is my first manual with an electronic parking brake. Some benefits I guess, but a lot of nannies as well.

I agree. Just saying, in my truck, it comes back. I turn on the truck wait 5-10 seconds, it switches back to the tpms screen automatically, and then I release the parking brake. If I release the brake too early, it’ll stay on trip B until I reset the brake. Again, this is how mine behaves, and maybe other’s do the same. Just throwing it out there to see if it helps anyone whose truck might behave similarly to mine. It could just be a fluke, and maybe I should record a video of it lol.

UPDATE: Just heard back from the case manager again and she confirmed with the local service manager that the behavior we're all talking about works like that on all Tacomas. Obviously we all knew that. Anyway, she said the service manager did report it to engineering. Long story, short it's probably not going anywhere but maybe if enough people go through this, we can get it into a software fix. They closed my case but I thought I would mention the end result and hope others can start a case of their own.

I work in IT and my instinct is to try stuff and troubleshoot until the dev team (you guys) has another build for me to try or specific instructions lol. But I also agree with your sentiment.
