I installed a full size tire 265/70r17 BFG TRAIL-TERRAIN T/A onto the steel rim the the temporary Goodyear was on. It fit perfectly underneath for me.
Good tip. I wish I would have looked at that on my TRD OR before buying a new TRD rim. I was lazy and assumed the spare rim wouldn't be compatible with a full-sized 265/70 R17.

I was disappointed that the TRD Sport came with 18” wheels but a 17” spare rim. WTF. I wish I could have used the spare rim. Great that it will work for you all with 17” wheels.
I also have a Sport with the 265/70-18" wheels. If I put a regular tire on the 17" spare rim, how will it drive? Is it going to pull to one side and can you drive at highway speeds with this setup?

The reason I went with the new spare arrangement is that I did not want to deal with an off size or temporary spare. On a long trip or a trip where I am dealing with bad weather I wanted to be able to change a flat and keep going without worrying about not going over 50 MPH or trying to find a tire repair shop. Can you imagine the hazard we would create driving 50 MPH on an Interstate. I also carry a plug kit and compressor, but still nice to just change a tire and move on. I live half of the year in south Florida. Due to the recent hurricanes many roofs are being replaced and there are nails on the roads everywhere. I went 20 years without a flat but had two last year alone with roofing nails. For me this was about $300 well spent.

as someone who had a flat @ 450 miles in from new. I had the rear driver's side tire go down while crossing the Golden Gate bridge . It was raining we were on the way to SFO 4 a xmas flt out 4 the wife .. She has to uber to make her flight . The trip home on the donut wheel on US 101 up & over the Waldo Grade was not fun at all .Slipping & sliding on the way up , down was like being in a 3 wheeled drift race .I went to a tire shop on the way home & replaced all the stocks with new tires . dumped donut wheel using a single stock tire as my spare on a stock alloy . I had added Methods rims just a week b 4 the flat. my donut wheel & tire looked a motorcycle tire with bald tread .Dangerous AF

That did not sound like fun. Years ago I got a flat crossing the Walt Whitman bridge in Philadelphia during a rain storm in my Troop Car. As a New Jersey Trooper, we would cut the corner by going through Philadelphia when traveling from north or south Jersey to the other end. I was in a police car with lights and a full size spare and it was still hairy getting off of the bridge. I can't imagine doing it in our Gen 4 and having a wife needing to get to the airport. Yikes!

I've decided to get an 18" wheel and tire to replace the temp spare on my Sport. I'm not looking to get the same style wheel that's on the truck. Could care less about a wheel appearance that's just going to be on till I get a tire repaired or replaced. When I call around to shop for a cheap steel wheel, is there a specification number or wheel model number (bolt spacing, etc.) for the 2024 Tacoma that shops would recognize?
