Why 35 PSI

Everytime I take my tacoma to a dealership or tire shop they insist on setting PSI to 35 lbs. I always thought you go by the door jam PSI which states 30 PSI front/rear. So why 35? Am I wrong?

When I find a tire pressure I like. Every time it sees a shop I tell them DO NOT adjust the tire pressure. Can’t say why 35psi? Most often they pic 32psi..

I think it is to cut down on customer complaints. If they set the tire pressure to what is on the door jamb, and then temps drop and people get low pressure warnings, they whine. So I have found that most dealerships for a lot of brands routinely overinflate your tires.

Haha I just had this thought the other day. Took mine in for the 5k/6mo ToyotaCare visit with 30psi in the tires and left with 35 in them. Oh well

I picked up my truck on Saturday and after reading this went out and checked mine they were all in the 43-44 range. I thought they were really hard feeling tires! They cracked over expansion joints like skateboard wheels. Now it rides a lot nicer at 32.

I probably observed the answer yesterday at the Toyota dealer express lube where I'll be back waiting before 7 AM. Two guys just grabbed the hose and filled until it stopped. One woman looked at door sticker, adjusted, then filled.

A funny twist to it was in dinner prep my wife said guys are good for a few things one at a time where she was at 5 things for the moment with 3x that to go go before bedtime. For all those differences she did seem happy I attempted vehicle maintenance and picked up a building supply order.

The door sticker on my TRD Sport says 32 PSI, not 30 PSI.

I wouldn't want 30 PSI in my tires in the winter as that would just make the tire pressure warning light pop on all the time.

yeah for sport (mine is) but posts from others, OR is listed as 30 though. On delivery mine was in the mid 40's, smh. My Tesla was also close to 50, norm is 42 but thats another conundrum.

On delivery yours was only 40? Mine was 51, even after I asked the dealer to make sure to check. I don't think dealer prep includes lowering the tire pressure on the checklist. All 4 of the last vehicles my family has bought, 3 Toyotas and 1 Mazda, have been delivered to us with 50+ PSI.

For standard load it’s really annoying and I tell them to punch it in at the door panel placard. It likely has to do with the Bridgestone / Ford rollover litigation from the 90s when pressures were often down in the mid 20s causing sidewall deflection and blowouts. So now everyone just does 35, tread wear and comfort consequences be damned

After years of trying to make everyone look at door jams to look up tire pressure we standardized to 35psi unless the vehicle or customer required something significantly different. Some European cars will use much higher pressures as will some heavy duty trucks.

What we found after years of using 35psi as our standard in tires is very consistent and even tire wear and it saves a lot of time.

Exactly - it is almost always safe and easy rule of thumb - but I always specify and they listen to me

I just assume everytime I go to the dealership I’ll have to adjust the tires when I get home.

Last time they were all around 35 and one was at 45. I do lose a little bit of faith in humanity each time.

I think it's because most techs at dealerships couldn't be bothered to use a tire gauge. They put the compressor hose on, swag it to a general target or preset, and then forget about it.
