@OlafTheNork That is the same for me - driving on mostly level roads, at 65-70 mph only gives me 17.2 mpg. I am also starting to have hard shifts, so I guess the failure process has started. Now to see where it leads. Good luck to all.

I don't want to spread unnecessary concern, just my experience. Not sure if it had anything to do with it, but most of my driving was in the "Eco" mode and got 19 mpg +/-. Since replacing the transmission I've run in "normal" and have been getting 23 - 25 routinely.

@Dirt I understand and I am not trying to spread FUD either, just trying to get a better understanding of what is going on.

That is a big change in mpg though and fits with what I am seeing. I had not seen that reported before and find it interesting. I just want to have as much warning as possible that my transmission might be on its way out.

Thanks for the input.

UPDATE - use this VIN lookup tool to determine if your VIN is affected by this TSB:

https://forms.gle/YWwM9Q3JJ8aWWHFW6

Here it is guys, official technical service bulletin for the codes that relate to transmission failure.

**UPDATED WITH PRODUCTION CHANGE EFFECTIVE VINs**

Steps to figure out if your VIN is in the TSB (by @taco_overlander).
1. your VIN is an exact match to the letters and numbers to the left of the "#" in the TSB list
2. your VIN has a number to the right of the "#" that is less than the number in the matched line found in 1.
If you can do both 1. and 2., your VIN is in the TSB

You do not fall under the TSB

I see this message. Is my Tacoma affected by the transmission problem or not? What should I be concerned about?

other than a stuck gear and bad mpgs, has there been any other signs leading up the transmission failures?

my Trailhunter has officially hit 850 miles , my 1 ,2 shift still hits hard EVERY time I time I take it out to drive. After it seems to run normal , mpg im getting around 17.5- 18 mpg. I did notice that if I start the truck and engage it into "sport" mode the shift does not hit. It is only when the truck is in "sport" or "eco" . I do get sudden jerks at a stop light from time to time, I plan on taking it into my local dealer and getting the oil change at 1000 miles and asking them to change the transmission fluid.

@SP4RUNNER You truck's poor shifts and low fuel mileage sound a lot like my Pro. I am starting to think that damaged transmissions are pretty common in 4th gens, and obviously the problem was not fixed by the time that they started to build the halos. Last week my truck added a new one when it slammed hard into reverse after it was fully warmed up.

It will be interesting to see if your dealer will change your transmission fluid and if that makes a difference. I will talk to mine the first time I take it in and see what they have to say. I hope they are working three shifts at the transmission factory, because they are going to need a lot of replacements in the pipeline.

Good luck!

Have you had any clunky downshifts?

Yeah, particularly at low speeds, even when everything is all warmed up. But today I drove it in my small town and 20 miles out on mountain roads and everything worked perfectly. I have no idea what is going on and I just need to start ignoring what the truck is doing and wait to see what happens.

How is your truck doing?

Mines like that too, sometimes really clunky down shifts sometimes it’s fine. My truck is still chugging along

I'm on the list as well. However, just made it over 1300 miles towing my camper, crossing the continental divide at roughly 20lbs under the GVWR of my truck. Chicago -> Moab. No issues thus far, hoping the return trip will be uneventful as well.

If the transmission made it going west through the Rockies with 270@25 winds up those 7% grades with a 4000# trailer, feeling pretty good at this point. Only time will tell I guess :)

Hey pal, I have 8500 total miles on my 2024 Sport Premium and I also tow a 4500# RV (approx 4000 miles towing) I fall under the TSB range, but it's running great so far. Did you make it back from your trip OK, and any transmission problems since this post? I'm planning a one month trip with the RV to California, Nevada, Arizona in Feb/25 so looking for all the real world info that I can. TIA!

Negative, nothing as of yet ... knock on wood. I'm also in the TSB range. The trailer's in storage for the winter now, the only thing that was a bit nerve-racking were the trans temps in stop-and-go traffic up a steep grade.

Thanks muchly. I also had the trans temp go up during a steep grade. After I figure out this potential transmission thing I will likely install a tranny cooler. My local shop (North Shore Offroad: https://nsor.com/ ) quoted approx $1000. Well worth it if/when I keep this medium/long term.

I think our trucks do come with a trans cooler, albeit it's a coolant-to-fluid transfer block. It's actually more for getting the trans up to temp, rather than cooling it down, but can in theory provide some cooling if trans temps exceed coolant temps.

Nonetheless, I did see there were some companies working on dedicated transmission coolers specifically for our trucks. Not sure if anything has actually hit the market, but it may be an worthwhile upgrade for those that tow frequently.
