I feel your pain. Just drove from UT to WV for Christmas in a rental Durango that got like 450+ miles to the tank. Now I have to drive from UT to FL in the Tacoma and I'm dreading the difference in mileage and how much more often I'll have to stop and fill up.

Tank size is probably my biggest gripe about it.
You are correct about the tank size being a missed opportunity to improve the truck. That said, I drove 2200 Miles over the holidays from WA to UT and back in a new Limited package with major storms each way and a couple of hours in 4H with an overall average MPG of 21.137. This isn’t much different from the 2019 TRD OR I drove the same route a couple of years earlier. The combination of better ride while maintaining significant off-road and towing capability made this fuel efficiency a real achievement by Toyota on my book. Otherwise I could have bought a Maverick or the like. Since I often tow, my only gripe is with the tank size.

I'm getting about 285 miles per tank before the gas light turns on, with an indicated 19.5 mpg. (non-hybrid, stock suspension/tires, TRD OR, 11k total miles)
80 mile daily commute mixed: city (~40mph), highway (~70mph) and windy roads(~50mph).

If you think it's bad now, don't put on heavier tires haha.

I got 33s on mine and she eats the gas. I can fill up on Saturday, and have to fill up again on Monday or Tuesday depending on how much I drive.

Used to get close to 400kms+ until empty, now I get about 350kms until empty, a lot of that is due to having to be in 4x4 a majority of the time too

Can't wait for LRA to come out with a 4th Gen tank. More range is always good!
Not much room to work with because of how Toyota routed the exhaust. Maybe if you moved the tank to the driver’s side, and redid the exhaust to run fully under the passenger. Might mess with all the sensors though.

Between the small tank and loosing the access cab, is keeping from me buying a 4G. Keep on checking in here to see if there is a solution, nothing yet, probably better off buying a Tundra, at least there is a 32 gallon tank option.

I've spent quite a bit of time under my truck. See all those empty spaces they carved out? That would add 3 or 4 gallons alone. They'll probably also make it a little taller. Add a couple more inches and make the back of the tank a little more square and I bet they could get 26 gallons. I don't know if we'll end up with a 36 gallon tank like the old one, but I'd take 26. There's also room for an aux tank under there if it came to that.

Aren’t those empty spaces baffles to help keep the fuel sloshing around? Guess if they are made from plate it would free up some room.

Seems like an extra expense for something that should of been done from the factory. Toyota does have 22 gallon tank in some of the Tundra lower trims, be nice if they would use that in the Tacoma.

Still on the fence about the 4G, the tank is a major hangup since I travel an awful lot. Used to getting 365-385 miles out of my 3G. Have done 400 if really baby it. Sub to low 300s in the 4G seems terrible.

I'm sure long range america will have something out sooner or later. Sure its annoying, but its not a deal breaker for me. Unless im overlanding im always within 25 miles of a gas station and if I'm overlanding I can take a jerry can.

22mpg X 16 gallons = 352 miles

18 gallon tank. I got as high as 24 before the lift and big tires
Yea, I know. But it starts bugging you way before 18 gallons are consumed.

My point was that 350 miles is quite doable for most people on the highway.

I pull a 6X12 enclosed trailer at times, doubt it will get 22 mpg, more like 15-16. Had a 1G with the 18 gallon tank, that truck consistently got 15-17 mpg, was terrible to travel in, had to stop for fuel often, carried two 5 gallon Jerry cans, had to tap into those many a trip. Gets annoying after awhile.

Not likely. Sounds like you need a bigger truck and tank.

Yeah not likely

Already lived with a truck with a 18 gallon tank, don’t really want to do it again.

Why I am on the fence, couple other things I don’t care for on the 4G too. Wanted an AC OR with the coil rear suspension, Toyota doesn’t offer that, could sorta turn a SR5 XtraCab into one, but no access doors, no coil rear, and small fuel tank, kinda kills it for me.

Can get that with a Double Cab Tundra, don’t really want a truck that big though.
