4g Tacoma MPG and Fuel Tank Size SUCKS!!!

Not trying to be a pain here but I always wonder why people buy vehicles they might not be happy with. Tacomas are admittedly expensive and have some compromises (the gas tank being one of them). If you knew this going in, I think it's hard to make the argument that the truck sucks. My thought is, you have a really capable truck. So you have to fill up a few more times, no big deal. Just my two cents. Not trying to start a battle here lol.

Never did I anticipate 17.5 l / 100 km fuel consumption. I want nothing more than to be happy with my new $85K truck. I was hoping the smaller tank would be offset by the better fuel economy when compared to my 2006 V6 Tacoma. And logic would say that should have been the case. And as I mentioned before on some other post, a difference in 3 l / 100 km would mean about $21K additional fuel cost over 400K km. Am I going to sell the truck? No, no I am not. Can I be frustrated with the difference between the stated fuel consumption (10.3 l / 100 km combined) and the actual... yes, I believe that's warranted.

I researched this truck for a year and a half before they come out and wasn't expecting 10.3 L. But 17.5 is a far cry and will cost me. I would have rather they had said 14 L / 100 km for the Trailhunter. I still would have bought it and just budgeted for the extended fuel tank. I've already spent in excess of an additional $10K to protect and outfit the truck, as I plan on keeping it for the long haul... or as long a haul as a 70 L fuel tank at 17.5 L / 100 km can get me ;)

Compared to my current 3G AC, the 4G XC looses a few things, no access cab, less range, payload and towing are about the same, still has rear leafs, plus it costs about $10K more. Get a little better lowend torque and that is about the only advantage.

Was very excited to buy a 4G, however compared to what I have now it went backwards on few things or didn’t radically improve on a couple others.

I had a 2G AC - yes no access cab :( should have at least one door; fuel tank is smaller by about 3 gallons, but I like all the new technology features like the driver assistance systems, infotainment , and connectivity. Also I did not have electronically locking differentials. I loved my 2G PreRunner 4.0 but I'm loving this truck more.

Don’t care much for the safety systems, have it all turned off in my 3G. Use the heck out of those clam shell doors, multiple times a day running around doing errands. They finally put in some great storage solutions, yet make it harder to access, doesn’t make sense.

Need a 6’ bed at minimum, DCSB won’t work for me, the DCLB might as well buy a full-size. Quite disappointed they killed off my favorite cab configuration. Was ready to lay down cash for a 4G, now don’t know what to do. Guess keep my 3G until it dies.

I live in interior Alaska, minus temperatures for the last two months, ive been in 4wd for the last two months, and im still getting 21-24 mpg.

The fuel tank is only a few gallons less than the last gen. Nobody really takes it down to zero gallons, so there is always a few gallons in the tank.

So, as such, my fill up is slightly less than my previous gen, and the gas mileage is slightly better, the engine feels like it has twice the power (due to low torque peak)......and i get the same range as my last gen.

Less fuel fill, same range, better power = Very Happy Win!

How many miles are you getting per tank?

Prerunners should do better than the 4WD. Guessing you’re on stock tires and unladen?

These trucks do “ok” in stock form for running around town. It is when you start putting on bigger tires, loading them down for traveling is when the small tank is going to be annoying. Toyota markets these trucks as adventure rigs, their slogan is “Let’s Go Places”, just don’t go too far. Ha!




Wonder the same since they put the tank on the passenger side and did the wacky exhaust routing.

The new Land Cruiser that shares the same chassis, gets a diesel in the overseas market, there is a DEF tank on the drivers side.

Could use that spot for an auxiliary tank in the Tacoma.

Plenty of people getting well over 20mpg on their Tacomas. Are you talking highway mileage or backroad mileage? If it's highway, I'm doing better than that with a non-hybrid, lifted, with 33" 10 Ply tires. Heck, I got the mileage you're reporting last night in a snow storm running 4wd. If I was getting less, it wouldn't be that big of a deal, but if you're getting the equivelant of 14mpg on the highway, that's all you or you have something very wrong with your truck. Lay off the accelerator and try not to spool up the turbo so much if you're looking to save gas.

2wd, 65mph highway, beauty driving with no heavy acceleration. I will take it in for a checkup.

do you see how many paw paw edition trucks we have on here? i'm not surprised some of these dudes can get 20+mpg going 5 under the speed limit and accelerating like there's a baby kitten strapped to the gas pedal.

pretty sure most people with pro/TH or modded ORs, etc will get well under 20 if actually driving like a normal person.

Usually about 3 gallons left when the fuel light comes on, don’t want to run it dry as it is hard on the fuel pump, or you have to re-prime it. Your best tank is what my 3G is getting at its’ worst. I am averaging 20-21 for my mixed road work commute. Pure highway can get 22-23 out of it.

Also, the electric gasoline fuel pump isnt like an old diesel mechanical pump that has to be reprimed. This isnt even up for debate. Ive been a heavy equipment mechanic for the last 27 years of my life.

I also have owned every generation of Tacoma including the third.
