If you’re up to speed on the TFL truck that broke and what the issue was, this seems to be the same thing. See video, at about 30 seconds you can see my front wheels lose power and hear what I believe to be the ADD break. I’m going in for a “diagnostic” appointment at Toyota tomorrow… which means laying on the frozen ground to remove skid plates tonight.

I went through the obstacle the other direction- started in 4HI, moved to 4LO, then had to lock diff to get out. On the return, I was in 4LO with locked diff and MTS deep snow from the start. Neither rear wheel had traction, and front wheels were both on icy snow.

After getting out (pulled out), I identified the issue fairly quickly since the truck looked and ran fine with the exception of 4wd. Computer would switch into 4HI/LO with no issue, and I could hear the electronic whir, but no engagement.

I’m going in first thing tomorrow morning- this should be covered by warranty. If anyone has dealt with Toyota and their diagnostic/warranty side, I’d love to hear your experience and any tips/precautions. As stated I’m planning to remove my RCI skid plates (engine through transfer case) since I’ve seen so many horror stories about having Toyota do it.

What is the build date? Can’t remember where but someone said the ADD fix was software that was quickly updated to the factory builds but was delayed to those in the wild, and often missed unless you ask the service to check for the specific update?

Interesting. So a lot of us could be driving trucks that might have this problem. It seems like Toyota should make this a recall for the trucks that left the factory without that fix.

Mine was a late June build and just assumed it was good but I’ll be asking!

I personally would not take it down.. The video shows normal truck stuff vs smashing it up rock faces. I think it proves that it was a truck issue vs abuse. leaving it up if Toyota denies your claim would look pretty bad for them too on a popular forum. I would be surprised if they don't take care of you and put you in a rental as with the tranny issues. I'm pretty sure that the Tundra guys with their blown engines are pretty well taken care of too. Keep us updated.

that def broke pretty easily the TFL was way more dramatic-good luck, I would remove any video evidence on socials if it where me :)
Social media is item 885,000 on an 885,001 item list of the total data available to Toyota. The truck stores enormous amounts of data.

I assume with all the coverage, bad publicity and diagnostics already done for the TFL truck you will be fixed and up and running in no time. Good luck.

Curious what your build date is? Would the software fix have been applied to your truck or not? Sounds like they were trying to get the fix pushed out late summer 24.

There is absolutely NO reason to take the video ‘down!’ If nothing else, it PROVES no abuse…!
Yeah, if that's abuse, then all 2024 Tacoma's should be put of flatbeds and just towed around everywhere. Don't allow the tires to touch the ground.

For those asking about timing… don’t know build date but took delivery in early August 2024. TFLs issue was 2/2024 and took about 6 months to resolve, and even with resolution Toyota hadn’t decided how to roll our software fix. It’s such a specific issue that I think it was low priority (as Sheldon their engineer said, stars have to align for this issue- 4LO, diff locked, snow mode, no traction in back wheels, iffy traction on both front). I wouldn’t be worried about it, I’d just avoid those conditions until you can confirm that your truck has received the software fix.

random Q, if it IS a software problem, how do we get the fix? Does toyota do updates over usb or OTA or will we have to take it in?

The way he was talking about it, it was going to be done at a regular service appointment because things have to be checked when it is installed and because of how rare/specific the issue is it didn’t come with a lot of urgency and they didn’t want to burden the customer.

Personally I’d rather they say “hey we identified an issue when you do these things, so if you expect to do those things bring it by for a download and otherwise we’ll take care of it at your next appointment” because I’d rather make informed decisions like the adult I pretend to be than be sitting in the dealership the rest of the day.
