With the help and suggestion from tacohunter2024 I was able to deactivate the automatic parking brake. Here is how I did it.

1. Start the truck.
2. Put on seatbelt.
3. Shift from park to drive ( with foot on brake obvs)
4. Push and hold parking brake button for 5 seconds. You will get a message on the center screen saying "auto parking brake function is deactivated"
5. Your good to go!

I never really use the parking brake much anyway let alone want it on whenever I shift to park. Hope this helps

What are the downsides of using the parking break? Using the auto parking break, I've noticed that my truck does not move at all when parking on an incline. It seems like it helps prevent wear on the transmission.

Just personal preference I guess. I never use the parking brake at all with an automatic trans. You do have to use them periodically to prevent the cables from rusting up for sure.

Best to leave it on and use it. A parking brake that is in use all the time won’t fail when you do want to use it in an emergency. Parking or emergency brakes should always be applied, that way it also gives you an idea as to when you may need brake work. Electronic emergency brakes are amazing for that reason. Not sure of any logic to turning it off on a modern vehicle. Likely doing more harm than good, those motors won’t be working and then they’ll seize up, only costing more to fix than a set of motors that are always in use.

My grandpa always said never use the parking brake when it is cold out as it could freeze. No clue if that is the case on these but that is why I never use the brake to this day unless I park on an incline. I also always turn my wheels to the curb. :cwl:

That's old school. The parking brake on the G4 Tacoma (and most other cars) is an electric motor in the rear caliper. No more cables to rust.
Sounds about right......I'm an old dude- lol. Pretty sure there was no electric motors on my 3rd

Moved to my OR from a 2017 CX5 - which has an electronic e-brake. It isn't applied every time you turn the vehicle off like the Tacoma is, but it has the same type of toggle switch. I turned the auto feature off because I can't stand it activating every time I go into park.

Also, not sure if the Tacoma's are the same or not, but there was a specific set of actions that had to be taken in order to do the rear brakes so that the pin wasn't damaged on my Mazda.

I do not like the automatic parking brake that engages when shifting to park so I have it currently deactivated. Everyone is totally OK to leave this feature ON if they would too. Believe me if I could deactivate the seat belt chime I would do that as well. Lol
