Go with your gut @MustardTiger. They are both nice trucks and I bet you would end up being happy with either one.

There was a time when I would have said to go with the Toyota for reliability and resale value, but I don't know that is a given at this point. I love my truck and I love Toyotas but it would be short sighted not to admit that Toyota has slipped.

@TacoFreak it's a really tough decision! I love my old Tundra...but it's also "old Toyota quality". I want to believe that the new ones still have the same lineage and legacy of quality within...but it remains to be seen at this point. Even so, I absolutely love the Tacoma, and think it's the better engineered truck all around. Toyota puts a pile of money and time into the engineering and development of their trucks...it's something that's so important and they cannot mess it up (...I say that looking the other way at the 3.4TT engine debacle).

The Colorado does lack some features (no Homelink is available across the platform, rear seat back does not fold, no power passenger seat (only available on the Canyon), no lane centering driving assist, rear sliding window is not power, no aluminum body panels, only one body configuration, etc. The 2.7T looks good on paper (310HP/430TQ)...but actual road performance is quite slow, and loud. Sounds like a bucket of marbles. But...it does offer automatic 4wd! And the ZR2 sure does look cool. I worry about reliability, and lower resale value...

@evlfred yep it has both wireless carplay and android auto

@MustardTiger, Go with the Tacoma all day long, especially for resale. You have to remember that the third GEN Tacoma had transmission issues for a couple of years and it has one of the highest resale values of any vehicle made. You can’t say that for any Chevy or GM product.

@SilverSurfer yeah you're right. It's quite tempting, not gonna lie...but browsing the Colorado forums...yikes. Lots of issues, especially factory quality issues with paint/trim/details. Plus, if you don't have a sunroof...you can't go through an automatic carwash or the roof will dent in. OMG.

Don’t get me wrong, I checked out the Colorado and drove it. The interior is bland the engine lackluster and it’s missing so many of the basics that it’s not really a value compared to the taco. It’s just missing stuff. But yeah, I agree. It’s probably going to have many more problems than the taco too.

@MustardTiger I agree with the other posts and I would go with the Tacoma also. I shopped the Colorado but it just didn't match up with what I wanted, and it has more issues than the 4th gen does. I just wanted to give you some space to explore your other options on your own.

Car and Driver did a good test between a ZR2 and an Off-Road, and picked the Taco. They said that on paper the Colorado looked like a winner and they were afraid a mob of Taco lovers would come for them when they picked it. But in the end they preferred the Taco and it was thousands of dollars less expensive than the Chevy. Although the ZR2 looks nice, I prefer that look of the Tacoma more, so my choice was easy. Good luck with yours.

The Colorado ZR2 is an absolute powerhouse and offers everything you could want—more than the Tacoma, in fact. The engine in the ZR2 is incredibly solid, built with internal components that are even stronger than the Tacoma's. It's designed to last and perform under tough conditions. On top of that, the ride quality of the ZR2 is noticeably smoother and more stable compared to the Tacoma, making it a more comfortable driving experience overall.

One of the standout features of the ZR2 is its suspension—it’s perfectly tuned for both on and off-road performance. I was originally leaning towards the Tacoma, but after test-driving both the ZR2 and the AT4X, I was sold. The ZR2 simply outperforms in several key areas, including rear seat space, which I was surprised to find is actually more spacious than the Tacoma.

When it comes to price, the ZR2 offers incredible value—it’s possibly the best bang for your buck, especially when you consider that a fully loaded ZR2 could be priced the same, or even less, than a similarly equipped Tacoma. If you’re looking for an all-around solid truck, you can’t go wrong with the Colorado.

Moreover, Toyota still has work to do on the new 4th-gen Tacoma, especially with its transmission and some lingering bugs. It might take a couple of years for them to really get it right. In the meantime, the Colorado ZR2 is a proven winner, with no compromises on performance, comfort, or value.

An interesting analysis @Norsk. I don't hate the Chevy, but I too have compared it with the Tacoma and came to a very different decision.

Putting aside the many issues with the Colorado, here is what Car and Driver concluded when comparing a ZR2 to a 4th gen TRD Off-Road.

https://www.caranddriver.com/review...ma-trd-off-road-2023-chevy-colorado-zr2-test/
Yes, I have read Car and Driver about Colorado/Tacoma. I’ve done some research and test driving, and I had the chance to drive both the ZR2 and AT4X. I was really impressed with both, so if you get the time, I’d highly recommend a test drive to see what they’re like.

As for the Tacoma, I do like it, but I have some concerns. Toyota has been facing some transmission issues recently, which is a bit worrisome. There are also a few things I’m not a fan of—such as the rear legroom, the smaller fuel tank, and the overall build quality compared to my old 3rd-gen Tacoma. I’ve also spoken with a few people who have the 4th-gen Tacoma, and they’ve expressed similar concerns about the quality, as well as the smaller fuel tank and rear legroom.

On the other hand, I’ve spoken to several owners of the Colorado/Canyon, and they’ve been very happy with their decision. Interestingly, many of them initially considered the Tacoma but ultimately went with the Colorado/Canyon. The main issue they’ve had is with some electrical problems, but that seems to be the only major concern.

If Toyota shares with us on what's wrong with the transmission and have remedy to prevent future issues, I would get a Tacoma.

Don't get me wrong. I like Tacoma and Colorado.

@Norsk Yep - all valid points, and the Colorado was the only other truck I seriously considered. Both trucks have some issues, but that seems to just be how things are in the automotive world today.

Like I said in my first post to this thread, I don't think @MustardTiger could go wrong with either truck, but needs to drive both and pick his favorite. If you can afford and find one, a Ranger Raptor is super cool too, but I have not looked closely at them.
